I have the front on the way and was about to order the rears. Anyone know if a 15 x 8.5 3.75" backspace Torq Thrust D on the back with a 275-60-15 fits? Doing some quick measuring it looks like it will but wondering if anyone has used that size without issue before I place my order.
I fit that size with 8" torque thrusts under my 64, but I had to trim the fender lip down to keep it from scraping.
Looks like I may be able to skate by. I found this car on line and he lists 275-60 on the rear. This is the exact look I am after.
I had those rims with 275 60 and with 2 or more in the rearseat it toushed somewere high up in the wheelhouse. Now i have 255 75 and they are fine but a bitch to get of and put on the car
I used to stuggle with getting big tires under a 64 Elcamino until someone showed me a trick. You jack the car up high and tilt the wheel face down under the drum. Pick the tire up with the hub down inside the wheel and rotate up in to place. Its hard to describe without seeing but it works great.
I have to drop the axle to get mine on and off. As long as you know what your limitations are you should be fine. Sometimes it just is not worth it though.
275-60 is to squatty and does not look that good. A 255-70 is just the ticket and will fit on on the back of a '64 with an 8" wheel.
Its a convertible if it makes a difference. I thought about a 255-70 at first but thought the 29.1" might be too tall compared to the 28" 275-60
They are not actually 29.1" tall, more like 28.75". I have used them in alot of other applications and they always look better than the 275-60.
managed to get the 20" truck wheels off tonight getting ready for the new combo. Found a quick easy way to get them out from under the 1/4's. I was able to place a small bottle jack between the spring and the frame to raise the body far enough off the frame to snake it right out.
Took a couple days to sell the other wheels and got the new Torq Trusts and tires 225-70-15 and 255-70-15 Its the exact look I was after and looks killer on the car but its just too close on the outer wheel houses in the rear. I now have this set up for sale and 5 spoke Hailibrands on order. I wish I had seen the Halibrands first because they make multiple backspace and are running a special so they are not a whole lot more than the TTD's were.
They are running a special on EBAY so I call direct and Richard said he would give me that price. http://www.ebay.com/itm/15x8-Halibr...Parts_Accessories&hash=item589c38dd0f&vxp=mtr
I had to call a few times but did get ahold of him. He sais he is having trouble with his voicemail system.
What ever I can get done Sunday is going to make or break my plans to take this car on Hotrod Power Tour next weekend. I can't use the excuse for no wheels because Halibrand came through with their promise and got me my "new" new wheels today. I am very happy with the quality. They are going to look sweet.
Not sure about the backspacing on my wheels, but here are a couple shots of mine with two different sets of 8" wheel/tire combos on the rear. They fit really nice. Both sets are 275/60-15 on the rear.
