Those with Moon tanks.....

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Waddayacare, Mar 1, 2013.

  1. And Moon look alikes.........

Do you actually use your tank or is it there just for looks?

I see so many cars, both street and strip, with them but are they functional?

    Pictures welcome!

Don't have one myself, but most of my friends who have them use them as overflow tanks for their radiator. As with many hotrod items, they seem to be more to attain a certain period look.

  3. Was always going to make it an overflow tank, but never seemed to get the time. So it is just for looks.

  4. Thanks to whomever cleaned this up.

It's amazing how fast a shit-storm can start.

  5. Damn
    I missed another one. :D

    Greg,
Most of them that you see around here are catch tanks, the only one's that I ever see that are functional fuel tanks are on door slammers with injection.

I use both of mine. One for pump gas and the other for Go-Go gas.

Never took it that way, Moon tank is what most call these things. It's just what fell in my lap, so I took it. I do have Moon gauges, does that count? :) (ok their refaced Autometer by Moon)

I use it for my overflow, so in a way I do use it. I've also helped another rodder out by siphoning some of the extra out at a show after they got a bit too warm.

  17. You got that right Capt. They do look good.

You see quite a few with a flip top, on most tracks that I have been around you can't use one with a flip top for fuel anyway, but there is no reason to let it go to waste.

I have a spun tank in the basement that will get used for Fuel eventually. But is not a moon or an eelco, its a no name brand.

NHRA required that "moon" tanks be mounted behind the frame rails so they would be protected in a crash. So some of those mounted up front had to either extend the frame, or move the tank back to meet that rule change back in the day. Originally many racers mounted them in the passenger compartment to make pressurizing them easy, but that also got quickly changed by NHRA to avoid a gas fire inside the car!

  28. Interesting!

    When did that take place?
