Here's my 54 Bel Air. I purchased the car with this ridiculously loud flame paint job. I'm looking for a more conservative, yet still custom paint job. Any ideas???

I tend to prefer a single color pearl or metallic paint on a custom. I love the body style of that year chevy and i think moonglow was beautiful. if that were mine i would paint it a nice pearl white( like the modern caddy color) and let the cars lines speak for themselves. Of course it's your car so you could panel paint it or lace the roof etc. if you really wanna go all out. Did you have a base color in mind? What does the interior look like? Flames, scallops, panels, fades, any favorites of yours?

IF you don't like the flames (and personally, those aren't "loud" to me), simply spray the front of the car/flames white (or whatever color of white that is) and "blend" them into the gray...that'll tone down the front of the car...and you can do the same to the sides...and you won't have to repaint the whole car (and that gets pricey...!!!)

  5. I thought it would be hideous, but I think I kinda like it. Maybe fade a bit like Studedude said?

Drive it, you can always paint it. A color choice can be a hard thing to suggest to someone else. I would take in some shows you may come onto a color you would have never thought of and its always nice to see it on a car and not a sample!!

You got to have an eye for it when painting flames. Simply either you got it or you don't.

That guy has an eye. Structure, overlapping, drop shadows, shading. Nice.

It's the color of 'em I don't particularly care for. And should've left the roof alone.

What a waste of time and tape.

What color's the interior? Kinda matters. It looks reddish from here which would cancel out root beer brown IMO.

I know how I'd paint it if it were mine.

You could paint the top and rear fenders white to match. Mabey some pin stripes on the trunk? The flames look good, but it's to much of a good thing for me.

Lose the rear fender flames and repaint the top same "burgundy" without the flames and it'll look bitchin!

  16. I had the same thought, although I am no painter.. If everything is buried in clear a pro could tell you if it would work. A quick photoshop of what could happen:

That is a badass major improvement!

  18. The rear flames need to go. Just too much of a good thing. Still , it really is a great flame job !

Metalflake fish scales, panels and lace would look good to me.

I like the flames, keep them someone spent a lot of money on the paint.

  21. I do not care for the rear flames, otherwise I like it. If it were mine I would probably leave it alone.

The problem, imho, is a mix of styles. Either 2 tone it, or flame it. The flames look really well done. 1.) Repaint the roof to match the body & lose the flames on the quarters, & it looks good. Or, 2.) lose the flames & keep the 2 tone roof/body. Looks good too. I like a good flame job, so I's vote #1
