my dad had a 67 impala conv. ss all org. 283 w/2bbl powerglide, ss was a trim package,

  7. The owner is having a 383/425 hp crate motor installed and mothballing this one. I expect to see clutch, carrier bearing/driveshaft,rear diff. maintenance in this ones future....Hell,I was destroyin those parts with a healthy 283 35 years ago...

  8. I don't care what it is but it DOES have double hump heads! How many 63 SS 4speed cars had 283s? Stock... I say its a 327/300 hp someone put a 2bbl carb on ...

Yeah, I see why you think something is not right there. I could see changing out the intake for two barrel but not the valve covers. Everything points to a 283 until you get to those double hump heads. Time to check the numbers. Nice car, especially with the gear shifter thingie.

300 HP engines had 2 1/2" exhaust. Unless they changed the whole system. If it's 2" snd rusty it's probably a 283 or 250 HP 327 ( but that should have a 4 bbl)

  12. Yes it just has my curiosity up...my buddy doin the swap is gonna run the numbers cuz we were kinda wundrin wtf? I realise SS cars had 283 but never with these heads...I still say 327 with changed out 2bbl/v-covers...

  13. I will check,I know the ex is new front to back soooo did they replace with proper size? Prolly replaced it with what was on it I'm sure...stay tuned...

Not all SS Impalas came with 327s/409s or even 283s, some had 6 cylinders.

Its time to pull the valve covers and check some numbers. Check the block castings nos also. I am thinking 283cid. The numbers will tell you the whole story.

  20. Or someone replaced a shelled 300 hp 327 with a 283. Pretty comon thing to do.

Maybe it's a 283cid. and they put double hump heads thinking it would make more power.

Correcto mondo the SS was a trim package not a performance package. My father bought a 63 Impala brand new with a 283, 2bbl and glide. I put Corvette finned aluminum valve covers on it. I totaled the car out one day and the guy at the body shop bought the car for the "327 Corvette engine" in it.

  23. Well this is 2013 and clear back into the later '60s I was seeing 283s with double hump heads. Also swaped out intakes.

Waayyy back when, I had a 65 Chevelle 327/300HP 4 speed car that ventilated the block and pan with pistons/rods. Went out and bought a fresh 283 short block, and put the heads etc on it. Maybe the same thing happened, and he thought that the AFB would be too much for the smaller cubic inches.

Years ago, a guy bought his wife a plain jane Camaro. It had a two barrel but it "pinged" so he took it to a mechanic. The mechanic discovered that the engine had 11:1 compression. The guy researched the Camaro and found out a little old lady had bought a Z28 but had the four barrel removed to get better mileage.

Im seeing a 283 equipped SS 63 that just has double hump heads installed. My brother had a REAL 283 SS 63 with 49K miles he got from original owner. It had power pack looking heads not doublehumps.

  27. I will get it soon.

That's no 283, the pad above the water pump is to large. That's a later SBC. Many thing's happen in 50 years.

Back in those good old days, a person could order a car with all kinds of options or deletes. Anything within reason is possible. Why not check the block number and know for sure?
