I would say at least double. Comparing steel to aluminum.

Wood470...correct, although I can't tell you the weight. Blowby...take your bathroom scales to your local speed shop and weigh 'em yourself. Then let us know.

I have a pair of American 7" and a pair of lookalike Fenton 7" that have a steel rim with alloy center (actually the whole face). The Fentons still have bald tires on them but boy do they feel heavy, and I remember Cragars feeling heavier than TTs. Soon as I get the tires off I'll weigh them.

I recall that my SSs were heavy. Steel outer welded to steel inner from memory. Can you weld alloy to steel as looked like MIG or electric to me?

    NO
There is steel weld plates cast into the spokes … that is where they weld the rim to the center

Thats why my cragar hoops would rust, and the spokes would just peal....

The rules for the stock drag race classes said that you could run aftermarket wheels as long as they weighed what stock ones did, so I would guess that the SS weigh the same as a stock steel.

The used ones I've been looking at look about 200% better. Stand up to aging much better.

Didn't know that. So I guess that's why Grumpy always ran Cragars.

what possible difference could it make ? at my age i have found all wheels are heavier than they used to be ...

  13. Cragar SS is a heavy rim, if they didn't carry so much sponsor money back then I really didn't understand why someone would have run them.

Sweet Nova. Well I'm planning a daily driver, I'd like a decent ride and at 1,500 lbs the less unsprung weight the better is my understanding. There are other supposed benefits which I'd also welcome.

Appearance wise I think some cars are SS cars and some are TT cars, depending on color, trim, etc.

Cragar also makes a lighter weight, spun aluminum wheel- it's called a 612 SS. It looks like the old SS wheel.

Just made the change on my car and the Cragars are 5 lbs per wheel heavier. I like how they look better though.

When I bought my 61G Cragars I noticed they offered a 612 in 15X4. I can't find a picture of one anywhere. You'd think they'd sell a ton of those if they look decent.

Highly scientific goings on at the blowby laboratory today. Finally got the gumption to remove the old skins from some swap meet mags using my bead breaker/gym machine combo.

One pair are TT clones all allum, no make cast into it. They are 7" and weighed 18lbs.

The other is a Fenton with steel rim/allum center. It's a 6" and weighs 20lbs.

So the obvious question is how much does one inch of rim weigh? Anyway, not much diff between the two. The all allum one feels like it might be heavier than a real American TT.

By the way, this 14" Cusionaire is going to the scrapper unless someone wants it. Got sidewall cracks but lots of tread.

18 pounds is pretty light. What does a similar sized steelie weigh?

For the heck of it, I just weighed 3 magnesium Americans. A 15x6 mag "D" spoke is 16.5 lbs ; A 15x6 mag lemans type is 15.75 lbs ; and A 15x6 mag torqthrust pointy spoke is 15 lbs even. I didn`t have any unmounted 15x6 Cragers to check.

Wow, that is significant if it's right. In it's defense, according to this site the Cragars have a load rating far exceeding the others, so it does have that going for it.

BTW, how did Nanook get all four wheels off the ground?

I had a chance to weigh a 15x7 GM steelie tonight as a comparison. It is 22.1 lbs.

Well somewhere I did read that given enough power, traction and suspension characteristics it is possible (obviously as in Nanook's case) to actually launch completely into the air.

Anyway, I held some Supreme style wheels at the swap meet the other day. They were a good price and would look good on my truck but my goodness, the heaviest wheels I have ever held! The spokes looked like they were made of 1/4" steel sheet.

  30. Ran across several Cragar skinnies... I'll see if I can post them!
