Anyone else have any comments about running a magneto versus distributor?

Great looking engine! Where did you get the oil filter set-up?

Thanks Jimski, Your opinion means a lot to me.

The filter set up came from Taylor engine. 562-698-7231.
The oil lines are normally hose, I did the steel lines because I like the look better.

I use the Ford Flathead V-8 engine mount pads.

  10. Is that a B or A block Crazydaddyo?

On another note I blew my first head gasket. Any recommendations for the best gasket to use?

  11. Like has been said before, the major problem with a magneto is there is no timing adjustment. I think I've seen special lead plates for the V8's that you could adjust it by on the fly. But I have never seen one for a banger.( not saying much there;) )

    It is a B.

    Where did the gasket fail?

I use the copper sandwich gasket from Best.

  13. So the oil filter is on the fuel pump boss then? Looks like a cool setup.

Best I can tell the gasket failed right up front at the water neck. It's pushing oil up thru one of the studs and spreading out over the head and it's got oil in the coolant and a little bit of water in the oil showing up in the filler neck.

I haven't taken it apart yet, as I wanted to have a gasket first, but I will grab a couple pictures.

    About head gaskets:

Pin the head and gasket so they stay in the correct position

Use a countersink to ensure that the torqued bolts don't pull the hole's edge up

I think Hylomar is the best sealer.

    Good luck

    Thanks Jim,

Any issues with the sealant oozing out into the crankcase and clogging oil passages?

It looks like it was developed for Rolls Royce and is used by a lot of race teams in NASCAR.

    Great lookin' banger.
Looks like you are running a harmonic balancer, is that correct?
Also, what is the generator? I really like the look. I need to kill the alternator on my banger it just doesn't look right.

The timing cover was a prototype by HAMB member Sawracer. He has since sold the patterns to this guy:

The mag drive is from Norm Frick.

Yes, that is a harmonic balancer.

    The generator is a powergen.
