Motivate me to do some bodywork!

So my '62 galaxie isn't as clean as I'd hoped, in addition to the visible driver side quarter and dogleg repairs needed, when I pulled my carpet I found the driver side floor pan needs to be replaced and the trunk floor has a few holes as well. I'm a welder by trade but I've never even attempted bodywork so I'm pretty nervous to start cutting into it. I have a friend who can shape the patch panels it needs, and he is quite the metal shaper so I'm confident on fit, and ill just buy a trunk pan from macs or ecklers. Is this a project I could finish in time to cruise by June? Ill be able to work on it on weekends only due to having my kids all week and working second shift(3pm-11pm). I don't know why this seems like such a daunting task to me...

If you took it to a shop , they should have the metal work done in a few days ( less than 5 for sure) and hand you a bill for 1000-3000 dollars.
How's that for motivation ?

Bring it to any reputable shop for an estimate that should make you want to do it yourself..Shop time is expensive compared to you home shop....Now damn it get dirty!!!

 

You are a welder,you have a pal that can help with the sheet metal,,I can't imagine any reason why you can't be back on the road by June.

When we were working on the wagon I only had a half day on Saturdays & Sundays,,the major floor pans,rocker panels,spare tire and quarter panels were done in 3 weeks.

I wont lie,when we were on a roll we worked some long hours a few nights and we lost power one day so nothing was accomplished.HRP

Daunting - ?
Probably because you've never done it before.
At one time in our lives the potty was very daunting too.


You have 9 weekends or 18days barring any of life's normal crazy shit.
That's 3 weeks there's no room for dilly dallieing

 

you can do it! just go for it and don't look back.... it's only metal, don't like it cut it out and redo it... weld, grind, cut, redo... ha ha.. we all feel your pain... but the feeling of accomplishment at the end will make it all good... we'll that's a lie too, you will just be damn glad it's over... just f@#$@ with ya... go for it, you can do it... if I can do it anybody can do it...

o... one piece of advice, focus on one small area at a time or looking at the overall will overwhelm you...

 

GET OFF YER FUCKIN ASS AND GET IT DONE!!

Sorry, couldn't resist. Then again, maybe HRLC will dog you like she does me about finishing my own vs my client's. Maybe I'ma PM her about it...

Thanks for the encouragement. It sounds like my plan of rust repair and primer isn't unreasonable. Ill stop whimpering and get to stripping the interior. I do have one question though. I'm assuming I should start with the trunk floor and move forward right?

Consider buying a cheap mustang floor pan and adapting it to your car. Seen it done many times. Mustang body parts are cheapest sheetmetal you can find. And it will look good. A good fitter will be able to do this easily. That means you!
