Flathead ford from a welder?

I ran across an old welder with a flathead ford in it and picked it up for little or nothing. It has been sitting a while but turns so I was thinking about cleaning it up and possibly using it in my 29 tudor sedan.
I also have a 351 cleveland that I was planning on using to begin with but then I found this.
    Any thoughts good or bad?

Post some pics of heads, front of block, back of block, area near intake manifold...we can start figuring out what flathead it is.
It would sure fit better than a 351...that is a pretty looong motor for an A.
Also, the Cleveland has only existed for about 40 years...I'd worry about using something that hasn't been adequately tested by time. No telling how new stuff is going to turn out...

Similar. but top and shrouds of the welder are more square leading me to believe it is newer. I'll try to get some pics posted today.
    Thanks for the replies!

I wrecked something like that many years ago. Motor was an army surplus engine.

There were a few of those flathead powered welders, sandblasters, and compressors at Paul Navarra truck wreckers on old Monterey Highway in the late '50s. All in a row.

My bud needed one for his channeled 'A' Coupe, (he'd blown up his 59A) we bought a 21 stud ('37 Ford) engine out of the compressor rig. Compression was 85 PSI in all cylinders, ran like a top.
I put that same engine in 3 different hot rods, we ran it for 5+ years!

    Question = Cleveland or flattie = ? ? ? ?
Question = which has the most cool = Flathead !
Question = which engine looks the best = Flathead !
Question = which engine will draw a crowd when the hood is off = Flathead !
Question = Which engine belongs in that car = Flathead !
Question = Which engine is more traditional = Flathead !
Question = Which engine will make the car go faster = The Cleveland if that matters.

  13. My freshly rebuilt flathead spent its life running some sort of water pump. It had coats and coats of paint from the years of maintenance. I sort of felt good thinking it may have been used a lot less than if it had been in a car or an old hot rod motor. It is just like any other flathead aside from the splined PTO hub that was bolted to the flywheel instead of a clutch.

I had a 400 Hobart with an 8CM Merc. It was one smooth old welder. And the bonus is listening to that flathead cackle while you weld. I'd never tear apart a good running welder. Get it running and use it.

That motor looks like a pre '37 21 stud. It could be OK, but the newer 59A would be prefered. Good luck with our find.

I agree I would get it running and use it. Way cooler than a modern welder.

Clean it up and get it running. If it holds up and performs, put it in the car. $0.02

    Good find!

I know a guy who has an air compressor made from a Deuce (could be a '32-'34 truck I suppose). I tried to buy it years ago for the grille and shell for the 3-window I had at the time, but he won't sell it. Last I saw it (you guessed it) it was just sitting out in the weather.

Irrigation is big out here in Arizona, and when fuel prices went through the roof back in the 70's many of the agricultural people converted their gasoline or propane powered engines to electric pumps. There are many old pump engines laying around behind the barns or in the barns and sometimes can even be bought when the price is right. Mostly flat Fords 8's or Continental 6's, occasional IH.

Would you be interested in it? I would like to put it in my car but may sell it too.

Get some shots of the generator, that might help. Before you tear it apart you might think about me supplying you another engine in trade for that welder!

I might be if it is rebuildable or has some compression? Considering you live close by. There is a guy up there that has a hood for a 49 Merc not sure of his location or if he wants to sell let me know if you hear anything.

I'd say use the flathead in your car and try to score an 80's four banger or maybe a little diesel for the welder, better on fuel and probably a little more reliable
