Ford 8" Rear Axle - Where to find one?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Harrison, Feb 25, 2013.

  1. I'm needing a right side axle for a mid 60's Ford 8" rear end. It's going in a driver (my '48 coupe) that won't see any heavy horsepower. Would like to find one cheaper than the $175-$200 stuff I'm seeing from Currie.

.... & no, unfortunately I'm not sure exactly WHAT it came out of. Mine is just past 31" long and is 28 spline.

Any suggestions on where I can find one priced reasonably?

    TIA, JH

  2. Jim,is the rear axle a early Mustang? HRP

  3. I have no idea. It came out of a pile behind the shop. Best guess has been a 67 Fairlane. It's wide.

It's leaking at the axle seal because it was corroded on that surface.

Measure from wheel flange to wheel flange and I can tell you what axle housing you have. It will help in locating one.

  6. Turbox2, I'll measure it tonight.

Napa was a bust. They don't offer one going back that far.

Looks like a small bearing housing out of an early Mustang.

Looks a lot like the 77 maverick one i have in my 35 chevy. I have a 66 mustang one too but the axle housing tapered down at the spring mount plates. 64 fairlane will look a lot like that too.

I'll take a look, I have a rack of axles, measure from the outside of the bearing to the outside of the flange where the wheel bolts on.

'64-66 Mustang 52.25 across the housing +5 axle flange to axle flange. Also Granada/Monarch 8in. Pinto/Mustang II V6 8in same width but those were 4x4.25 bolt circle.

    '66-70 Falcon, '66-69 Fairlane 2in wider.

'67-70 Mustang also 54.25 housing but spring pads same width as '64 Mustang (not that it matters in this case.)

    '71-73 Mustang/Cougar and (I think) '70-71 Fairlane/Montego 2in wider than that (56.25 housing, 61.25 axle flange to axle flange.)

This is all I have first-hand experience with, can't tell you anything about pre-66 Falcons or Fairlanes or anything Maverick.

Pretty sure by '66 Galaxies were all 9in or 9 3/8in.

  12. In most cases small bearing 9" and 8" axles interchange so that may help with your search

Also check out Pinto, Mustang II, and Granada. They were used until 1980. I'm still looking for a limited slip.

Just replace the bearing with a sealed bearing that does not require a seal.I think 55 or 56 Chevy bearing is the same dimensions as a small bearing Ford . Should be cheaper than an axle. Good luck

  16. Ok..... flange to flange is 59.25". Flange to outer edge of the bearing is 2 3/8". The axle itself is 31.125" from flange to the end of the splines.

    Sounds like '66-70 Falcon, '66-69 Fairlane/Comet/Montego, '67-70 Mustang/Cougar.

When you say 'leaking at the seal' you mean the axle grease seal that's down inside the tube? I wonder how long it'd last to smear some JB Weld on the axle and sand it down to fill in the corrosion.

There shouldn't be (your vent tube is clear, right?) any pressure on the seal, it's just a splash-seal to keep the diff oil from running out of the axle housing in corners.

  19. The vent tube is clear and yes, I'm talking about the grease seal in the end of the axle tube. Its leaking like crazy.

Just getting the rear wheels off this thing is a chore. I really want to fix it right and be done with it. JB Weld just isn't an option on this one.

    Thanks, Jim

I find complete 8" Ford axles all the time on Craigslist for around $100-$150 or less. You should have no trouble finding one on there.

X2........... last time I bought them, about two years ago, IIRC, they were about $15 each.

They come in size (diameter) ranges and when pressed in place make a nice tight fit and a great new seal surface.

I don't have a small-bearing 28-spline axle here to measure, as long as it'll fit over the splines I think it could work but if you ever had to change bearings the sleeve would have to come off too.

I checked I have nothing left, that's the axle that works out to cut and spline to 27 inches which I use often to make 57 inch rears. good luck.

  26. So far all I've found is a part number and a list of cars the axle came in.

Deuceroadster actually had posted this information several years ago:

Part number - C90Z4234A (Right side)

    31 & 1/8th

    Comet 66 200-289-390
    Comet 67 -289
Comet 67-68 200 with removable carrier
    Comet 68 302
    Comet 69 w/28 splines
    Cougar 67
    Cougar 68 302-390
    Cougar 69-70 w/28 splines
    Fairlane 66-67-68 200-289-302-390
    Falcon 66-70 w/removable carrier
    Falcon 68-70 w/removable carrier & 28 splines
    Mustang 67 8 cylinder
    Mustang 68 289-302-390
    Mustang 69-70 w/28 splines

I guess I'll spend tomorrow on the phone trying to find one.

    Thanks, JH

    jim,

i still haven't located the one i told you about. it's out of a mustang, but it's newer than '70. i'll still keep looking for it and measure when i find it.

note: i have a pretty good idea of where it is, but it'll take a couple of hours in an unheated shop moving stuff around to get to it.

as before; if i find it and it works you'll get it.

  29. I Speedi-sleeved both of my 9 inches axles. No leaks so far...... I also used sealed bearings.

  30. Thanks for all the help guys. Guess I should update....

I convinced myself that the seal surface wasn't pitted bad enough to leak like it was. The old seal in the housing was kinda "collapsed" looking so I started the search for a new one using the vehicle possibilities posted above.

Ended up with a seal that listed for a '67 Fairlane and another seal using the part number of the collapsed one in the housing. I started with the matching part number seal. It was a bear to get in but I got it after a lot of careful work. But it was slightly collapsed. I pulled it and installed the other one. It went right in with a nice, press fit.

The collapsed one had a slightly larger OD than the one that listed for that rear end. The ID on both was the same. I put 100 miles on it the last few days and it's not leaking anymore.

So, crisis averted. Fixed it for the cost of a new seal, a bottle of gear oil and a few hours studying part numbers.

    Thanks, Jim
