I'm 58 -- oh crap, I'll be 59 in a few days, and I've abused my hearing most of my life with rock concerts, open headers, riding Harleys, shooting etc. I'm paying for it now with the constant ringing and the wife that thinks I'm just ignoring her. I, fortunately, can still hear my 2 year old grandaughter's laughter. I haven't been to a hearing specialist because I'm afraid of what they'll tell me I guess. I've always worn eye protection but have been lax about taking care of my ears.

Guilty here. Lifetime working in a loud industrial envoirnment, race cars, guns, straight piped motorsickles, cranked Super Reverbs, concerts, mowers, you name it. I totally fucked my hearing over the years, and now I'm paying for it.

Young guys, take this warning seriously. Take care of you ears (& eyes). You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone, & it ain't fun.

If you can't hear this perhaps you need a hearing aid.

    Click for hearing test...

Same for me. Hearing loss and ringing but the other issue is memory loss. Don't think that was caused by loud noises but man is it embarrassing

  6. Had an interesting conversation with our high school band director a little while back (I teach music for a living). Apparently, it's been proven that sustained levels of 80+ db for 40 min or more will permanently damage your hearing- 80db is equal to the dial tone on your phone.

    Please, protect your hearing.

I have the same problem, constant fizzling and ringing in the ears caused by too many (punk) concerts, work and loud motorbikes.

Never had a problem, but it was that one concert that was too much and the noise in my ear would not leave.
This was about 15 years ago and at first I thought that I will never sustain it.
Fortunately I got used to it but it took quite a while. Most of the time I do not hear it.

My problem now is that I have become oversensitive to all kind of noise. It makes me feel extremely uncomfortable to the point that have nearly quit going to concerts. I have to use ear protection for most, even not so loud works and often stop my bike on the roadside to replug my earplugs.

Yep, can't hear my ohm meter beeps anymore and can't hear folks who can whistle real high and that danged 24 hours a day ringing in my ears and in a crowded noisy room can't understand anything anyone is saying and can't understand what is being said on a lot of TV shows and yada yada yada yada...
Put in the ear plugs and turn that loud music down.
I played in loud rock bands, worked in race shops and am now paying the price and it is too high a price.

It took exactly one rock concert when I was 16 (I couldn't hear the traffic driving home) to make me realize I was going to protect my hearing, I will be 60 soon and I can still hear my kids plotting against me.

I drove eastern dirt modifieds for 25 years and raced bikes and go carts before that at almost 50 i have that engine roar all the time when its quiet. and now when i hear a loud noise it goes into a ring, it has become the biggest regreat of my life. I cant have a converation or talk on the phone if there is background noise. I used to get so pissed at my dads hearing loss and having to repeat myself now im worse than he was at 70. great post thanks for bringing it to light.

Ringing in the ears has no real solution to it. I don't have ringing nor hearing loss I have always wore plugs. But loudness is not the only cause of ringing. Ear infections , also large amounts of caffeine can cause ringing also people with eustachion tube blockage also suffer ringing. Build up of ear wax is also a cause. For people with ringing try using a white noise machine at night it makes the ringing unntoticable and you sleep better. Being in medicine I have seen alot of hearing damage and its all preventable

So if I switch to decaf, maybe the ringing will go away?

not a big fan of the spongy ones you stick in your ear. I like the big ones that cover your whole ear, whatever they are called. use them 90% of the time when grinding or making other noises.

I used to build elevators a few years back. the old guy teaching elevator school told us the same thing, don't be stupid like he was. all the "old Farts" in the trade were half deaf. it takes a lot of noise to build an elevator.

I have only about 20% hearing in my left ear ever since I was a kid. lots of times I can hear people talking but don't understand what they say if they are standing on that side, so I try hard to protect what is left.

Yeah I tried a pill, don't remember the name. It didn't help the ringing but I farted a lot and I did hear them.

    Great advice in this thread.
As a welder for many years working in really noisy environments I have always worn hearing protection.

I carried that over to working in the garage and mowing the lawn.
Also to shooting and riding my motorcycles.

As a result the only hearing loss I have is age related and small.
    No ringing thankfully.

    Now the joke :
There is a new type of Aids.
    It's called hearing aids.
You get it from listening to assholes :D:D
