Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by bp1971, Feb 21, 2013.

  1. Please help...are there any tricks to installing the 90 degree boots on to the spark plug wires. I am extremely frustrated with this process.

A good lube and needle nose pliers has always worked for me. As with any exercise in proper penetration, make sure everything is well lubed prior to insertion! 0.0

also have the boots good and warm. I usually set mine on the hood on a summer day until I use them well lubed. I prefer a little silicon spray or wd-40 but many things work. Hell just spit on it.

Silicone spray wont degrade the rubber and makes them really slick for pushing through.

I use silicone spray too. Always worked for me, just take your time and be careful.

Use silicon spray, slide the boot on first twisting it while you slide it on a couple inches past the end. Cut the wire and add the 90 degree metal end, them slide the boot down over it. Twisting it gets it through the boot easier.

Just a squirt of the wife's dish soap. Slides like a sloppy whoremon.

Hahaha...I just made my plug wires 30 minutes ago....
I just put all the 90* boots in warm, soapy water then slide 'em on...less messy than WD-40. I then strip the wire and crimp the end on...

i just did a set last week, i used some spray silly-cone and plain wire crimpers. but i have just bought some real plugwire crimpers because i went to pull one of to change the cap and the damn thing came apart. i just couldn't get a good crimp on them.

A buddy uses the spray silicone but pushes a large Phillips screw driver thru them first in order to coax them to "straighten out a little while" before inserting the wire. But I think the hot soapy water trick sounds even better as it would soften-up the whole boot. Gary

I ground down an old screwdriver to help push the terminal and wire through the boot lubed with WD40.

You are putting the boot on the wire before crimping on the terminal...Right??

Actually I used brake part assembly lube when I made yours.

  22. Dielectric grease on the inside of the boot and a little on the wire and it'll push right thru.
Takes about 5 minutes to do a full set.
No silly cone or wd 40 mess

Plastic wire tie on the wire itself and soapy water, pull it thru with wire tie.

I use this type of bent needle nose plier. You can get them around the bend to pull them through before putting the end on. I use dielectric grease, but the silicon spray sounds like a good idea too. Will have to try that next time.
