1936 Ford passenger car headlight mounting main bolt nut is 11/16. It is also a hard nut to find because it is about 3/4" ht and the size is 11/16-18. Just try to find one. Also, most tie rod end nuts LH and RH are 11/16.
spark plugs and lug nuts ... not that you would use a wrench on them mainly. Some people argue just to feel their lips move.
Beats me why 7/16 nuts aren't 5/8" like the bolts. That's the only common size that's like that, unless you're working on certain farm machinery. I think it's Noble that ups the size of all the nuts they make.
A lot of jamb nuts are 11/16 as well as a lot of brass fittings on glad hand airlines and air brake systems.
i'd like to see some pictures of these so-called 11/16" nuts and or bolts. then we should hear from dr.phil or oprah on this for some real answers.
I used 11/16th wrench or socket on 3 vehicles in the past week; rear bumper of 55 Chevy (7/16th bolt), seat belt bolts on 69 Ford truck (I think they were 7/16 fine thread), and strut rod to lower control arm bolts on 66 Mustang (3/8th bolt with over-size head).
If they are working on jap crap 17 mil is the size they would be using. Can,t pin point the last time i used a 11/16th spanner (wrench), but it does get used alot on pre 1980s cars in australia llewellyn
I was lying under the pickup yesterday, undoing the torque bell nuts, cursing and thinking to myself that there must be a smaller size castle nut to fit 7/16" bolts as these nuts are too close to the bell to get a socket on there, and the mechanical brake gizmo is in the way to get the open ended spanner on there properly. And to Willy301, if you're working on metric/import stuff, 11/16" is a (slightly loose) fit for 17mm, for M10 fasteners.
I have used the 11/16 recently as I remember searching high and low for it a few weeks ago. I think I used it stripping the Model A down. Not wanting to sidetrack the thread but you think 11/16 is odd? I was in NAPA the other day asking for a 1" and 61/64 socket. Yes, really, a 1" 61/64. It is the socket required to tighten the steering wheel nut on an old MGA. The guy said that in 25 years he had NEVER sold one. Unsurprisingly, they had to order it!
I've got an 11/16 in my toolbox that I had to cut in half years ago in order to install a power steering hose in very tight quarters.
Ok, it has been proved there is a use for an 11/16" wrench, but what do I do with the 15/32" wrench that came with my HF wrench set?

Or they always pay someone else to do it for them. I can't come up with anything off the top of my head but I use an 11/16 wrench all the time.
Not that you would use a wrench for it but Yblock head bolts are 11/16. Picked up some bulk 7/16 nuts awhile back & they were all 11/16.
