I'am installing a 9" ford in to my wife's Buick. I got the rear end out of a junk yard so I do not know what year or model it came out of. My problem is finding axle bearings. NAPA can't seem to find the one I need. The rear end is old small ford 2.835 O.D. X 1.378 I.D. X .675 wide. The problem is the width. I can get a bearing same size but the width is .875 I don't see how the will work. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
How To Recognize 9" Housing Centers They do NOT have a removable rear inspection cover. '57 - no dimples, flat center band up the center of the rear cover, bottom drain plug. '58-‘59 - two dimples on back of housing, flat center band, some had drain holes. '60-‘67 – have two dimples, flat center band, oil level hole in back cover. '63-‘77 Lincoln, LTD, and Thunderbirds had 9 3/8 inch centers, housings were cut away at the gasket surface for ring gear clearance, one curved rib at the front top portion of differential, strong but poor selection of axle ratiosTypes of 9" Axles 28 spline axles cannot be shortened and re-splined (they're tapered). '72 and earlier 31 spline axles have the ability to be shortened . '73 and later 9" (cars) have a 5 X 5 ½ " bolt circle and the axles cannot be shortened . '67-‘73 Mustang axles are identified by wheel flange center, with oval hole/recess - 28 splines, with two large holes/recesses and a counter sunk center - 31 splines Given a choice of 28 or 31 spine axles, you want the stronger 31spline versions5 X 5 ½ " lug pattern is a "truck" bolt pattern, 5 X 4 ½ " is a "car" bolt pattern.
I checked all around the net. It seems there's only one small bearing. The only part number I could find is BCARW207CCRA
Is it possible you have an 8in. rear end ?, That bearing matches my 8in. MasterPro® Bearing/Seal - Wheel Bearing Part # RW207CCRA Line: MPB 11.99
That bearing is made by BCA, and the part number is RW207CCRA, go to any bearing supplier or auto parts store and give them the number, they should be able to cross it to the brand that they sell.
That was my thought, too. Bottom front third member nuts.... if you can fit a socket on them, it's an 8", if not, it's a 9"
Moser? http://www.moserengineering.com/small-ford-stock-id.html I've used these an' like 'em 'cuz they don't need no stinkin' axle seal. Dunno' the thickness, though...if that's what you mean by width.
Some 8 inch, and small bearing 9 inch used the 207 bearing. Wheel Bearing - Sealed Type - Rear Wheel Part Number: PGB PRW207CCRA Product Line: NAPA Proformer Bearing IMPORTANT INFO: w/ 8", 9" Ring Gear,Except WFD Axle,w/ Locking Ring,w/ WFD Axle,Sealed Type
First thanks for all the help you guys have given me I really appreciate you helping me figure out what happened. Some one years ago installed an 8" bearing and seal into this rear end. Hence the two different bearings and seals. It took a little head scratching to figure the one out but thanks again.
