Rootie and Carl, looks like the real money was in selling hats and white shirts...probably neck ties too. I wonder if those hats were on backwards like today...haha.

Re : Oakland Speedway; In an earlier post(approx page 512?) the track was labeled 3/8ths mile(?) ; I was always told(& reminded by this well-known picture) that it was a 5/8ths mile, & that the site is now a shopping center near 72nd ave. Can anyone verify the accuracy here? thanks. drtrcrV-8

Oakland Speedway was a 1 mile dirt track in the 30s. Oakland Stadium was a 5/8 paved high bank track in the 40s-50s. Don't know if they were in the same location though.

5/8 paved and later a 3/8 dirt in the infield.

As a kid my dad took us for ride around the 5/8 on the wall in the family car. It was better than any dizzyland ride.

The 1 mile Speedway was often called the 'Langhorn of the west' Here's a little info:

Oakland Speedway was in what is now is San Leandro Ca. at about 152nd. ave. It was torn down and two drive in theaters were built, they were later removed and Bay Fair Mall was built and is still operating today. Bill

My uncle Joe Giusti raced at the old Oakland speedway and told me you had to get going pretty good to go up on the high part of that banked turn, said it was crazy, he drove hardtops in the early 50"s he also raced at Bay Medows which was a horse track in San Mateo.

Joe James "at the office" in the Zinkmobile circa 51. Dont know the track, but the background looks to be a western states track. Also looks like someone got busy with the ol blue tip saw on a chassis bracket for some reason.

Now that you mention it that r/f also looks unusually small, for 1951 anyway.

    :)
Yes, the Right Front is mounted "backwards" to push the wheel just a little farther outside and increasing the track. You can see the wheel weight studs on the wheel; they would normally be on the inside. Halibrand wheels were so that they could be mounted in either direction and change the offset on the hub; at least with the wheels that had a separate pressure plate instead of having one built in.

Here is a picture of both Pestana-Lang cars at the Hanford mile and a half which no longer exists. The 98 driven buy Dick Atkins and the 99 driven by Dee Heilman. The 99 car was the ex Fike Pluming car that Parnelli Jones drove in USAC. Bill ( Hi Pam)

Yes, I looked in my programsand there is a picture of that car.The reason i asked my uncle Joe Guisti whose name they failed to print correctly raced at that time he drove for Ernie Ruiz in the Traveton Trailer sprinter number 65 and for in the 98 car for Jerry Pitman witch he raced back on the IMCA circuit. Wish I could find more results, these guys also had to race some pretty big names then Foyt ,Andretti,Larson,Macelreathplus the local hot shots.. In one program I think the line up had nine guys that went to Indy and five that had owon there. This was at Ascot also they raced a lot of half mile tracks, these guys had big ba donka donks......

I don't get to visit this thread as often as I'd like to - I'd never get any work done if I did... any way, here are some more of my water colors from a while back.

Not sure if these fit the theme, but figured they might be of interest?
