O/T Curious what all you hambers do for work?

i was an offset pressman for 18 years untill the economic downfall in 2009. loved doing it and miss it. i am now a flexo pressman and i make those little white labels they use to mark and put around bundles of wires. i hate it!

 

I build malls and shopping centers.

 

I work the counter at a parts store,

 

Worked on the railroad for 38 years fixing and testing railroad signal systems now retired. Now I spend my days working at Ron's Hobby Shop on cool Hot Rod projects just loving every minute.

 

Work? I try to avoid it.

Used to manufacture fruitcakes for the Christmas trade. No kidding, 70% of the fruitcakes sold in North America are made at the Weston plant right here in Cobourg Ontario. We made 132 different brands. All the production machinery was old, cast iron, streamlined stuff from the forties, perfectly maintained and painted white every year. It was great.

 

Computer consultant/programmer/designer is my daytime job.
First techie job was repairing and maintaining the hardware including the big mechanical stuff. (Yes there are a few old geeks that didn't lose their job to offshoring and outsourcing).

 

Being retired for the last 30 years from the speed industry,,I now spend many hours a day reading and laughing at the many stupid remarks here on the HAMB...and there are more than you think..

In the middle of a career change.

Opening an Art Gallery. Life long dream of mine.

 

After college (1972), I worked as a Commercial Artist for a shop called "The Studio". Clients were Hooker Headers, Isky Cams, Edelbrock, etc.......Our salesman had a "locked on" the inside cover, middle and rear cover of all the major magazines. After that, I worked for "Creative Artist Inc" designing wrapping paper and small ads in the Flexography printing industry. From there, I went to "Standard Graphic Arts" designing boxes for produce growers in the San Joaquin Valley. I also designed the intake manifold boxes for Edelbrock before they went to colored labels.

Working as an artist worried me because I knew I couldn't live on Social Security when I retired, so I joined the L.A. County Sheriff's Dept. I did that for 28 years, till I retired. Been retired for 2 years now and loving life. Unfortunately, I still have a house payment so there's no "mad money" any more. Fortunately, the 2 cars I do have are done.

I have been retired for 12 years ,I was the Facilites and Transportation director for a small school district in NY. Now I have a small shop, I do all kinds of stuff sometimes it good fun and some times not.

WHAT? I was always under the impression that there were only a Fruit Cakes ever made and that everyone just passed it on (re gifted) from year to year cuz no on e ever actually ate one!

 

They wear out eventually so every year we turn out a few new ones.

I like fruitcake, try a slice of the dark fruitcake with a wedge of sharp cheddar and a glass of whiskey.

My HAMB friends are now the only people outside the culinary intelligence community who know this, one of the world's most closely guarded mysteries:

Fruitcakes are manufactured in a secret underground fruitcake foundry, hidden in a bland industrial park in Canada, and smuggled into the country under cover of darkness during snow storms.
