Unloading the Golden Sahara must of been quite the chore. This is an out take to a famous shoot with the Golden Sahara and his bad ass blown caddy powered boat taken at I believe Castaic Lake in California. Photo: Barris Kustom City
George was all about driving his creations when he could and bringing some friends along. Here George, Jeffries and hard to see Bill Carr (don't know the other 2 guys) drove the Kopper Kart and the Aztec all the way to Columbus Ohio to show at the United Custom Car Show " Cars Of The Stars" held at the Franklin Memorial arena. The Show also featured Jane Mansfield's car witch george built... Jeffries always looking cool with his Monster Shirt.. Photo: Barris Kustom City
This is turning into one of my favorite threads. I assume George took the hubcaps off the Kart to drive it to Ohio?
Yes the Tiago ranchero in its 2nd version.. the first version ruled too.. Brad Masterson what doing a clone but the owner ran out of dough...
I can't get enough of these photos, way different from the norm. The Kopper Kart and the Aztec trip with Jefferies. Bill told me it was a long and hard one as they hit shows all over the place. He also told me they strapped all sorts of things on the front of the cars for protection from rocks and bugs. In my Rik Hoving picture folder, a great color shot of the Aztec and the Kopper Kart sitting in front of the "Welcome to Ohio" sign at the border. Great stuff..thanks. BARRESSE'
Notice the coupe in the corner, was the Chrisman coupe, then George got it, reworked it for John Geraghty, who put in the blown Olds that was in the "Grasshopper" roadster on the HRM Oct '59 cover...even had a radio with a radio aerial on top, and skirts behind the front wheels...it was in this condition that Art Chrisman found it when he started restoration into its present form...said Art to George, "George, you sure know how to screw up a car," or so the reports of the time said:
Thanks Barry for chiming I have a few more Aztec photos i'll be posting in the next few days... I've seen that shot in front of Ohio sign as a matter of fact I have several other photos like The kopper kart in front of the Texas sign etc.. seems they would stop often in front of those to document the trip... pretty neat!!
Yeah he did a number on that car... I wish he would of built that out of another car then it would of been the coolest.. but yeah it kinda sucked he did it to that car.. It was that time tho.. More is better!!!
Great pics Piero, got any from early 50s National Roadster Show (GNRS)? I have said it before and I'll keep saying it. Good thing George did customise the Chrisman coupe otherwise its future just may have been the scrap heap. By the late 50s it was in no way compliant with any rules for drags or SCTA events.
The Kart had 57 Olds hubcaps, with 11 (eleven!) 55 Olds flippers on each. Very heavy! Probably fell off a few times, so he took them off for the long trips.
Apparently there was a commercial with the Aztec on the boob tube. A commercial for the W.VA?? Autorama and George quick to get his camera out while in a hotel room snapped a photo of the TV to prove it... I think the photo was taken in 59 when George and Jeffries were on their way to Detroit Autorama... I think thats what the commercial was for? I don't remember seeing a W.Va Autorama?? Maybe there was.. Photo: Barris Kustom City
