Oh yeah by the way every frenchman drives a Citroen DS even in the XXIst century if you listen to Hollywood, kinda like every american dress, walk and talk like John Wayne and chew gum.

 

"Kill the Irishman" about Danny Green by far had the most automotive errors in it. Great movie, great actors , so its a little surprising.

Continuity , years, parts , frequency. It has them all. Hell in the first 10 seconds you will spot an error. A new cop car following the actors car.

 

There is an element in Hollywood for whom Europe is not a collection of countries but a composition of historical epochs. To them travel there is time-travel. For instance, there are three Londons, which exist in 1332, 1889, and 1940, respectively, and no other London.

Some errors are unfortunate because they could so easily have been avoided through a bit of consultation. I read a novel set in the early 20th century in which the heroine stepped on the accelerator and let out the clutch of her Model T. It was an enjoyable novel, but getting the pedal-controlled epicyclic box right would just have added another layer of authenticity.

I notice a lot of errors in films set in the Middle Ages, as it is another interest of mine. Surviving medieval architecture is rare, but so much 19th-century Gothic Revival is reasonably representative that there really isn't that much of an excuse, especially at close quarters. But we see lancet arches in what is supposed to be 1025*; but much more often Renaissance and even Baroque innovations in what is supposed to be 1295.

(*though I've personally seen "accidentally cusped" arches dating from before AD1000: an arguable precursor to the Gothic independent of any Islamic influence.)

The same goes for armour: 16th-century plate harness in the supposed Dark Ages, etc.

 

I spent too many years learning to count rounds, notice weapons and know the capability's of each weapon that its hard to ignore, I do it subconsciously now!

Grenades annoy the hell out of me, there is two types in movies, one will destroy a city block and the other you could almost be sitting on and not notice! Grrrrrr!
OH! and why does EVERY explosion go up like there is a barrel of Petrol in it? Trust me, the flash in the center of a Military grade explosive is NOTHING like that! Believe me, I have been too close to several of them. One of them put me in hospital to have shrap removed from my back!(Yes I was running away!!)

Then that takes me on to Emergency rooms!! If movie ERs were real there would not be a population issue in this world!!

I think it's just us lol. My ol lady is always sayin I pay to much attention to the movies. The one that come to mind HAMB friendly was (Last man standing) Bruce Willis driving model A down the dirt road and old patina model A's along side of the road how did they get so old so quick ??

another one I thought of, although WAY off topic car-wise, I like a bit of sci-fi stuff, and one show I used to watch had space ships capable of going all over the universe, yet the inside of the ships were lit with 'fire pots'. seems if you can master traveling the galaxy, you could come up with fluorescent lighting, haha.....

 

In Good Morning Vietnam there are probably 6 cars only and they keep going around the place in front of the bar like they're some kind of slow Nascar.
On the other hand there are really good movies like Red Baron where you can actually see the rotating engines on the WWI planes, the mechanics on the bomber plane wing and even the wings moving up and down under the forces and all this stuff is CGI, and even multiple period correct cars (despite the fact that they are way too shiny) and correct license plate. There are most likely mistakes, but nothing too obvious.

 

Anyone else but me notice that a fully compacted Lincoln doesn't bottom out the springs or flatten the tires a little, when placed in the back of a Falcon Ranchero in Goldfinger?

 

I enjoyed "zombieland" but I couldnt help but laugh at the unending shots from the shotguns and guns in general. I was also confused when they went to the amusement park - where did the electricity come from? - Doesn't there need to be people somewhere controlling the powerplants?

For me it all just akes the movies more enjoyable overall (a few times annoying)

 

For me it is the sound effects.
There are some sound effects that have been used so many times it's ridiculous.

Like that god damn yelling monkey in EVERY jungle movie! I hate that noise. E E E OOH OOH OOH AH AH AH.

 

I always look for Radial tires in period movies.

The screeching on dirt always gets me too

One thing that drives me nuts is when the starter sound does not match the car,I heard GM and Ford cars sounding like a Mopar when starting.

 

I try to ID mills, lathes, and other machining equipment in movies. They don't pop up often so it's a thrill when they do, lol.

 

The OP asked if any other hobby stressed over the movies. I can answer that for the horse group and the answer is hell yes. There are no horses that can keep running for hours on end. I found that all the movies seem to stretch the imagination to a point of disbelief, both on the big screen and TV. That's why I gave up my Direct TV and spend my time on the HAMB and only watch porn as I think its all pretty much accurate.

 

When the Lincoln gets lifted up in the air you can see up through the empty engine compartment, through the missing firewall and missing seats and see light through the back window! And I saw that the first time I saw it at Grauman's Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Blvd!

What bugs me is in movies and on TV people still type like mad fools on computers and then pound enter as if a mouse doesn't even exist!

 

The movie 'No way out' with Kevin Costner has a fax being sent with the page facing up so all that would have been sent is a blank page. It is just amazing what computers can do and how fast they can find even the most obscure details on a person in Hollywoodland - always annoying. NCIS is a big time offender. But most of them look as though they are running from the DOS cli (command line interface) and that there are no GUIs (Graphic User Interfaces) no mice, touchpads and no multilevel passwords - all driven by hammering rapidly on a keyboard. Green fluorescent characters on flat panel displays seem to be still 'en vogue' too. Which along with biometric scanning - retina or fingerprint recognition for access through security doors - cloning cellphones to eavesdrop - seems more than a little paradox. But hey, they're computers and green fluorescent on a black background is what computer displays look like isn't it?

 

Ever notice in the old movies and tv shows of the 50's and 60's they always take out the rear view mirror for the shots from the front? And I guess camera lens tech wasn't what it is today, so they always have the front seat passengers sitting right next to each other. Seemed kinda strange that Barney and Andy were that tight.

 

I used to always get a kick out of watching WWII movies shot in the 50's and 60's where the Jeeps were painted up newer model CJs.

 

Trust me, all hobbies get peeved when Hollywood gets it wrong. I deal with the 18th century living history. Rob Roy and Last of the Mohicans got that community in an uproar when they came out 20 years ago! Watch for the asst. director with baseball cap and bullhorn when the British march out of the fort in LOTM.

 

My dad was a big time gun nut. You should have heard the screaming every time the show producers got a firearm wrong.

 

Earlier post was about aviation movies...No Sheeeeit. Haven't seen one that was worth a damn depicting actual flying conditions and outcomes

Several things bug me. One is guns. According to Hollywood, all firearms make these clicking sounds whenever they're touched or moved in any way. I'm glad we had different weapons in Vietnam. Night patrols were scary enough without our M-16s clicking away for Charlie to hear. Also, all bullets make sparks, no matter what they strike. Glass, wood, flesh, it doesn't matter. Sparks
We watched 24 religiously. Jack Bauer could bust a car window with his elbow and then pull out, what I like to call, the "Magic Wires". The magic wires reside under the dash of every car an are made up of a wad of copper thhn household wire with two bare ends. By rapidly striking these together, accompanied by a dramatic shower of sparks, the car will start. The magic wires also disengage the steering lock.

Actually that sound is a Kookaburra. A bird native to Australia and New Guinea but apparently Hollywood thinks they exist in every Jungle worldwide.

I drive my wife nuts. I am a stickler for accurate details in TV, movies and books, both historically and technically. If I see something wrong, it ruins it for me. It tells me that the writer didn't bother to take the time to do their homework or know their subject matter or they are trying to put one over on us, thinking we won't notice.

My biggest pet peeve in TV and movies? Freakin' sparking bullets!! Goddamnit, I have fired a lot of rounds, even old steel jacketed bullets, and I have never seen a round throw off a shower of sparks when it hit something...ever.

The other big one for me is historical musical inaccurancies. For example in a movie set in 1941 they will be playing a song that wasn't released until 1944. Sloppy work!
