Im building a 62 cutlass and want to see pics of other 61-63 olds f-85/cutlass, pontiac lemans/tempest and buick special/skylark. corvairs are ok too. Ill start with some pics of my car and some of other cars i have saved. First one is my car.
Very understated little cars with huge potential for about any style build. I almost bought a Buick in '07. Sorta regret not doin it.
I do, or I wouldn't have asked, it's HAMB friendly it's sitting under my 49 Merc. I'd still like to know what they are called.
O.K. is it an A or a G ? Reason I ask, when you look things up say suspension , brakes etc. a lot of times they refer to the body or group or the biggest confusing description, a metric chassis ! And it does have some metric nuts and bolts on it. Just trying to learn something I didn't know yesterday.
http://www.summitracing.com/expertadviceandnews/chartsandguides/a-gm-body-code-guide This list has it as an "A" body.
Here's mine from about a year ago... I have since done some bodywork and drive the hell out of it! Andy
Are you refering to the G Body, A Body or the original poster's Y Body? Just looking for some clarification...
Then that list is wrong! 1973-77 Cutlass/LeMans/Malibu/Skylark = A body 78-87 = G Body (also known as "Metric" or "Metric Chassis) I never knew the early ones were called "Y body" cars. Viva la HAMB!
In GM parts terminology it's considered an A-body. In '82, the same chassis was redesignated as a G-body. The Celebrity and other similar GM FWD cars then became the A-body. Clear as mud, eh? And I thought Y-bodies were always the Corvettes. Gotta do a little more research.
FWIW -- A bodies were Chevelles (and the other GM variants) from 64-77; with the downsizing in 78 they became G bodies. Suspension-wise almost nothing other than steering boxes interchange between them and the 64-66 A bodies are a little different than the later ones (like rear springs don't interchange, the rear end is a little narrower, etc. on the early ones). The mid-70's Novas (75-79) were X bodies, as were the earlier versions 68-74, and also the 80's front drive cars like Citations carried the same X designation. The mid-70's RWD X versions shared many parts with 71-81 Camaros/Firebirds, the 68-74 RWD X car versions shared most parts with 67-69 Camaros. F Bodies were Camaros and Firebirds. I don't remember what early (62-67) Nova's were called, I thought they were also known as X bodies but am probably wrong. A 67-69 Camaro and 68-74 Nova rear end will bolt into an early Nova, but it is a little wider. I had to do fenderlip surgery on my 66 Nova when I put a z-28 rear end in it back in 1979. Al in TN
I started a y body picture thread not a gm platform designation discussion. Can we please keep it on track?
Sorry, but got to correct all the mis-information.......1978 FWD Malibu, F85, Century, etc. carried on the "A" body designation from the RWD Chevelle, et al. However, remember the RWD 2 door Monte Carlo, Gran Prix, etc. carried on - these were designated as "G" cars. I worked on the 78 "A" program for GM....................OK, carry on with "Y" bodies......
OK - wow - forget the last post - brain fade - 82 "A" was FWD. In that year, RWD carried over and was called "G" body. Sorry..... But, 78 intermediate was still "A" designation.......
