What did your dad drive?

Hmmm so many cars and nooo pictures . but the ones he talks about the most are :

33 ford
57 chevy fuelie coupe ( this is the one he wishes he still had )
61 chevy dual quad 409
harley servicar ( he got rid of it because everytime he took a corner to fast it flopped over on it side
65 Chevy 1/2 ton stepside (my favorite and now in my possession)

 

All Fords - 48, 54, 58 Fairlane, 62 TBird, 64 Mustang, 68 Mustang, 72 Mustang and on and on.,

 

My dad drove pretty much any kind of car he could afford, raising 4 kids on an honest mans wages. Most of the time they were rejects from wrecking yards but occasionally he'd score a decent car. He never owned anything classy but always found transportation. I miss him, rest in peace dad.

 

Dad drove used Cadillacs that he got from Aurora Cadillac where he was the service manager.

 

in 1962 dad bought a 1957 vette. he still has it. in the last pic it's on the left.

 

A better question is what DIDNT my dad drive. He had/has quite a few cars. Falcons, Novas, a couple Buicks. Hes more into late 60's - Early 70's muscle cars though. Current project is a 68 Buick GS 400.

 

My grandpa's first car was a '33 Cabrio that he bought for $25 without a title and had to drive to Mexicali and back to L.A. ever week to get gas because they had to have registration to get fuel because of rationing.

My dad's first ride was a '68 Camaro with cragars then he drove a '69 Dart 2dr hard top when I was a kid, then bought the same '57 Chevy hard top that I own and drive today. I won't let it go as long as I'm still breathing.

(I'm 28, so it wasn't that long ago.)

 

My Dad's first car was a 29 model A that he said convinced him to never have another
Ford. Then He had a 31 and 37 Chevrolet. He then had a 41 and then a 48 Hudson. He then got a 56 Cad. and a 62 and then a 72 Olds.

 

A baby blue 5 window deuce. Still has it. And, he's pushing 80 years old now.

 

My dad's first car was a '36 Ford four-door he bought around '48 or '49 - had it for three days, then the wiring caught fire. He hauled it back to the dealer and left it there. Last Ford he ever owned.

After that, he got this '48 DeSoto:


Which he traded in on a new '53 Bel Air two-door sedan; then in November of '56 he went to the Buick dealer and ordered the one car I wish he'd kept:


He kept it until '62 when the Dynaflop lost reverse. He briefly had a '59 DeSoto which he sold when he got to use his brother's coral-and-white '58 Bel Air sedan while his brother was stationed in Iran. That was replaced by this slant-6 '61 Dodge:


(that's 5-year-old Chrisbcritter aka lil' smartass). That got replaced by a '64 Biscayne sedan, then a '69 Delta 88 455 which was the first car I rode 100 mph in; thanks Dad!

The rest have been O/T Olds and Buick sedans, but he'd still like a ride in a '37 Cord someday...

 

My Dads first car was Grandmas old '57 Ranch Wagon. The first car he bought new was a '69 Mach 1. Then he had a couple of Shelbys, a '68 GT500KR convetible and a '69 GT500. Then he switched the '69 for a '73? Corvette. Then the trucks - '73 F250 w/ hot 460 then a '76 Blazer to a '82 Blazer with a 454 replacing the 305 the first week he had it. He still has the Mach 1, wishes he never got rid of the F250, I wanted the '82 Blazer, and now he would like to find a nice Ranch Wagon.

 

Cool thread! This is the '57 Ford my Dad had when I was born. It was his pride and joy. That's me eatin the crackers...

He also had a '35 Ford Coupe but had to sell it because after I came along he and Mom couldn't afford to have two cars...

 

I recall seeing a picture of a 50's Buick, remember riding in a bathtub Nash (you could play baseball in the back seat). In 57 he bought his only new car. A 57 Ford Del Rio Ranch wagon. He HATED that car. If he only knew how popular that car is now. Come to think about it he would still hate it. After that he would only buy the cheapest used cars. Usually he would find "little old lady cars". He had a knack for that.

 

Dad had a 38 Ford four door then the 40 in the picture (yeah, that's me in about 1948 or 1949). He said the 40 had too much power for the chassis Guess that is why he bought new Nash's in 1949 and 1950, I think he had a little gas in his blood but having grown up in the 20's and 30's he took good care of everything he had.
Later Dodges were his choice, a 55, followed by a 58 (I wrecked that one twice), that baby would run 80 on gravel roads just like a ship on the ocean. His last car was a 63 Dodge Dart GT, I got that up to 110 MPH, good little car.

An easier question of my dad would be what did your dad NOT drive. Dad's first car was the 1940 Ford Tudor he still owns ($75 all the money earned detassleing corn the summer of 1958) He also had Corvair Spyder he traded for a '58 Corvette. Also had '59 El Camino, '56 Ford F100, '40 Ford Convertible, '68 Camaro Convertible just to name a few. The '40 Ford Tudor, the '40 Ford Convertible, and the '68 Camaro are still in the family.

 

Lots of different stuff. Need to get some pictures from my mom. Here's one I have that was in the local paper before I was in the picture. My brother and sister looking like a boy in the backseat.

A '78 Ford LTD Bro-ham 2-door.... Last of the BiG ones.... Baby blue with a darker blue landau(sp?) top.. I let the ol' lady drive it after dad gave it to me, and she wrecked it....

 

Here is a conversation that I had with my dad sometime back. We were looking at a 57 Plymouth at the time:

Dad: I had a 57 plymouth once.
Me: Did you buy it new?
Dad: No, I bought it in 58 (he would have been 19 in 1958 BTW)
Me: You traded that for your 59 Impala convert?
Dad: I guess....no, wait... I had a 59 Tbird in there
Me: You bought a new 59 Tbird and traded it for a new 59 Impala?
Dad: Yes...I really liked that 59 Impala. I put a custom grill in it. It was a neat car.
Me: I agree ...
Dad: I traded it for a new 60 Oldsmobile convertible

Needless to say, he went through alot of cars over the years. He traded one in on the average of about 6 month in the early years before he got married.

 

When my dad split he was driving away in a 78 LTD. Brown on brown.

Buicks , Packards, Pontiacs and Cadillac but mostly 18 wheelers coast to coast.

 

My Dad drove and owned a lot of cars back in the day, but he would always tell me how impressed he was with the 34 Ford. That comment must have had an impression on me, because I have spent the last 25 years collecting 33-34 Ford cars and parts!

 

63 Impala SS, 327 4 speed. He built the rebuilt the motor with my uncle and its was so fast he drove 50 miles to sale it to someone out of town so he wouldn't have to race it

 

His first car was a 36 Chevrolet Master deluxe that he bought at a bankruptcy auction in 1938 for $190.00. He got his draft notice a couple months later so it sat in a shed until he got out in 1945.
He traded that on a new 48 Chevrolet, traded that on a new 51 Chevy pickup to pull the trailer they lived in as he moved from job to job in road construction. Both my older sister and I came home from the hospital in that truck.
Before my brother was born in the fall of 1954 he bought a 55 Chev 4dr sedan.
He traded the pickup in on a 57 sedan delivery in 62
He traded the 55 in on a new 66 AMC Ambassador 990
The 66 got wrecked in 68 and replaced with a 68 Ambassador.
My brother got the 57 sedan delivery and Dad bought a new 73 Ford pickup
He sold the Ambassador in 75 and bought an Olds 88 from the car dealer I worked for.
In the fall of 79 he bought a new 1980 Chrysler Newport.
He sold the Chrysler and bought an 89 Chevrolet Caprice.
He sold the pickup in 95 because he figured he didn't need it anymore since I had one
He had the Caprice until he died in 2006

Pop`s bought it when it was 1 year old...
thats the one I remember,,I drove it through high school...And still have it..I converted it to 4x4 just after high school..
The guy next to the Caddy was Dad`s best Man,,
I don`t think he ever got the 2 shoe box Fords done..
He sold them when they moved into the house I grew up in...
Mom would not allow them at the new house @#$%^
thats me on the T-Bird,,My favorite year bird to this date...
Not sure whitch car was Dads,, in the yard,, the rest were his friends...
I think its the 53 54 Chev left side,,,, Dad & moms first new car.
