please help identify old V8 engine

Helping my neighbor who's husband passed away liquidate some of his stuff left behind. Looks to me like an old ford or mercury engine. She seems to think its an old studebaker from a 53 champ. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

A Buick 215 would have an aluminum block, so just check it with a magnet.

 

I'll check for that thanks. Any idea if these engines are some what sought after?

 

It appears to me to be a '64 Buick 300....a derivative of the 215, and used aluminum heads and intake, '64 only. The tranny is a ST300 with the switch pitch converter. You can see the converter control switch on the drivers side of the carb, That squarish box shape with wires coming out of it.

The little 2 speed automatics used on 215's were smaller than this tranny.

300 Buick is right...............I have one here out of a 66 Skylark.......with trans... and it is dam sure for sale........

you nailed it, they need good gas and perform quite well.

 

Looks like it may have been in a fire. The 64 aluminum heads and intake are one year only. If they are in good condition you can sell them to folks that build big inch Buick 215s and Rovers. They also use the cranks but they are not that hard to find and expensive to ship. Front covers with good oil pump surfaces, and straight oil pans are also desirable.

The Buick 300 is a very compact, light weight motor with a lot of performance potential. Unfortunately, the performance aftermarket never offered a good 4 barrel intake. The 64 heads and intake are not that good and are only desirable because the 215/Rover crowd want to stay all aluminum.

The 65 and up cast iron heads used on the 300 and 340 motors have more performance potential. In 65 Buick offered a 4 barrel high compression 300 as an option. This was the only 4 barrel manifold offered by Buick and it is somewhat rare. They sell for $300-500 when offered on eBay.

So, if you have the cast iron Buick 4 barrel intake you can build a potent motor around it. With the much more common 2 barrel manifold you have nothing going for you.

The automatic transmission that came with the Buick 300 was unimpressive in it's day and it is difficult to find parts and people that work on them these days. The TH-200-R4 is an excellent match as is the TH-350 and TH-350C.

 

I should have looked at the pics in big version. I see now that it is a 2bbl engine, not the 4bbl aluminum intake and heads 64 version.
