Projects 1940 Ford - Giving a 70s hot rod some new legs...

This is my dad's 40 ford. He traded it straight across for a Model T roadster he built from the ground up about 30 years ago or more. He decided to put MII underneath since he could finally afford it.

 

Also about this car, it was painted in the 70's in Eureka, California.

Looks good. 40's were almost made to have flames.

 

It may have been built in the '70s, but does not have any of that '70s baggage.

Well in the family as in he's owned it for 30 years. But a huge part of my childhood was the family piling in the car and going to different car shows down in Southern California. Every year we would go down to LA to visit my grandma in the old girl. It's been WELL driven over the years. Always been a family car in that sense...

 

I'll shoot some pics of the interior tomorrow. I just bought my dad a 40 repop steering wheel for christmas.

Ok, I see now. My wording wasn't very clear. He built a Model T roadster about 30 years ago, and soon after building it, traded it for this car. So he's had this car for 30 years or more, now.

We used to go to this little rod run called Run of the Redwoods down in the Humboldt County area, every year. It was a little 2 day car show where everybody pitched a tent and camped out next to their hot rods. It used to be 48 and earlier only. Good people, good times.

 

Pulled the engine, trans, and suspension out today.

Got the old crossmember out today.

The old suspension setup is for sale btw. Superbell 4 inch dropped axle, GM disc brake, split wishbones, monoleaf spring. Message me if anyone is interested.

Here's a picture of it at Washington Billetproof 2011, right next to my 47.

It had a real mean stance, I'm hoping we can achieve the same with the new suspension setup.

 

Haha, it's funny because all of the stories I've heard from previous owners of this car say it was more of a loaner/beater car. If somebody was going to a rod run and didn't a have a car, they would just throw them the keys to the 40. I remember when I was younger there was this really rough looking guy who looked like he had partied enough for two lifetimes walked up to the car and said "hey man, I used to own that car". He looked really drunk, so I thought ok, he's just full of it. Thinking back now after learning a little bit more history about the car, he may have borrowed it for a while, or actually owned this car at one time. When my dad first got it, it was full of burger wrappers and trash in the back seat. I'm really surprised the paint and interior are in as good condition as it is. It really puts a new meaning to the phrase "survivor car".

Gotta love a old 40 Ford Sedan,,my kids were raised in the back and saw thousands of miles and several different states from the comfort of the back seat. HRP

Waaaa......Waaaa...... I want flames too but I cant picture what colors would look right on my red coupe. Suggestions? Be gentle.

 

Dang, it's hard to say what would look good on red...
You could try and get someone to photoshop you some flames.

That helped me decide whether or not I wanted scallops on my '47 sedan. I opted to leave the scallops as an idea

Very cool 40! I like the flames as well. It's pretty cool he's had it all these years and the entire family went to the rod runs!

He just got a new crate motor for it a couple weeks ago. He still can't believe this is all happening. It's been a shoe string budget car for as long as he's had it. Can't wait to have her back on the road!

 

love it! one thing i must have missed--didn't all the rods back in the '70s have back tires sticking out about half a foot?
