It's good to get all this out before the new year.

Can I mount my transmission backwards to get 3 reverse gears?

Ah, come on now, he wants to cruise through Goodguys every hour on the hour with his gear drive making a racket like the rest of the cool guys. Give him a break:D They don't call it pro fairgrounds for nothing.

In a vw you can if you flip the ring gear, four gears even! Why would you want to run any type of gear drive? Get a nice chain and gear set and call it a day.

  10. Depends on what cam and thrust plate you are using. Most won't work with a GM roller cam.

  11. The answer is Yes, but you need one specifically for the factory Hydraulic Roller cam. Jegs has them, quiet or noisy, the noisy one will drive you bonkers, and the quiet ones aren't much better, good luck, TR

Why not? Nothing wrong with a gear dive. Every top fuel dragster and funny car runs one. You can gain a little power with a Jessel belt drive, but t isn't cool on a hot rod. Go ahead run one, but buy a good one, not chink!!

I'm okay now, I just had to work it out and after a vote we decided that the whole affair is stupid.

So, final answer: maybe, maybe not.

I love cars with gear drives. The cars can be bought pretty cheap. Why? Because it does not take long for your wife and kids to refuse to ride in the noisy vehicle. After a while you get tired of the noise yourself. You put the car up for sale trying to recover what you have spent on the build. Everyone that comes to look at the car says no thanks because of the noise. Thats when I come along with cash money and buy the noisy car for a song knowing that all I have to do is replace the gear drive with a timing chain and a few gaskets. I then flip the car for hefty profit. I have done this several times.

And all this could have been avoided by using a quiet timing chain set up.

back to the question...another problem is they'll set a vibration in the block, and if you run EFI or anything else with a knock sensor that relies on vibrations in the block to determine the engine is under detonation and retard the timing until it stops...well, you get the idea.

what the heck, its your property. as long as you aren't ruining it with something that can't be unbolted for future generations to understand how things used to be...what's the difference between engine noise and raccoon tails on the antenna? we've done weirder stuff as a kid.

  23. Sure you have. There are just hundreds of guys out there, with noisy gear drives, that would rather sell their car to you, at a huge loss, rather than spend an afternoon and a hundred bucks to switch to a chain. Things must be different in Kentucky.
