Scott, Do you have any idea what that big thingie is hanging off the front of the rear axle third member is in the fourth picture? I've never seen anything like that on a drag car. It looks like it is held in place by a strap. Any ideas???

Wow that's very not typical. It looks like it has a Clutchflite (I ran one for a while in one of my altereds) but with a manual clutch I don't understand why they would run that through a trans brake. Maybe it was used for staging the car. It looks a little like a pinion-mounted brake. Many racers used a slider clutch (I did) with the Clutchflite and with that pinion brake then might have been able to set the air gap on the disc tight and not get any creepingat the line.

 

My only other guess might be a planetary step down unit like a Lenco so they could switch from 1/4 to 1/8 mile racing gearing with the flick of a lever?

 

Is that a LAMB pinion brake ?

Its true Clem passed away last week. He was a regular fixture in the north east and will be sadly missed. A true innovator, and an east coast hall of famer.
