Hey all, Happy Holidays! In the never ending quest for the never ending list of things I'd like to do to my 58 F100, I'm giving serious thought to swapping in a 300 in place of the 223. Has anyone done this? I've done a lot of researching but haven't really found answers to my questions. If you have, what problems did you encounter? Any year motor to look for or avoid? Will my og 3 speed mate up with the 300? If not, what did you all do for the trans, either manual or auto (i'm open to either-and I have the original 3 speed top loader from my old 65 Mustang I could use) Any thoughts, tips or advice will be very much appreciated. Thanks, Rob68 (will also post on 57-60 F100's page)
Why wouldn't it fit? It was a stock engine in the F-250 and the space under the hood is the same. here are some photo's of some very good running competitive Ford 300 inline's which are still the strongest inline block made in by the big three in America. One here has a Power Glide, two others are using a C-6 and all are successful. Normbc9
Three of the four sixes pictured above aren't even 300 Fords. Have you checked out www.fordsix.com? Look in the 240 / 300 Big Block six forum.
65 f350 300 6 front and rear mounts(bell housing ,etc. ) should work . very similar frame to 57-60 f series.
As stated, it should be a fairly straight forward swap. You should be able to use your 3 spd if you find the correct bellhousing, and since the 300 has the same bolt pattern as 302's and 351W's this should be easy. Otherwise, you can put just about any other Ford trans you want behind that thing. C4, C6, AOD, Top Loader, T5, M5R2, etc. The other thing to wathc out for is that the intake and exhaust is on the opposite side of the 300 from the 223. So there may be some clearance issues with the battery, heater, etc. Good Luck.
Try Ford Truck Enthusiasts web site. They have a forum just for the 50's f100 and thIS is very common swap....
Thanks for the info guys. Found the forum on Fordsix but haven't checked with the Ford Truck Enthusiasts site (forgot all about that one)
Im putting a 240 and a M5R2 in my 59 I will try to help out along the way. Im picking it up today. I havent even started and I can tell you it will be well worth it over what you have.
