So wouldn't the farthest forward tire trigger the light regardless or does the inside tire trigger the first light and the outside triggers the second.. I am assuming its like a door sensor at 7-11.
Ryan, I was just explaining how it was explained to me. Might have been for a lot older timing system who knows. One of the threads on gassers talks about it also.
Think of it this way... The lights don't trigger the timing until it sees "nothing" in it's way. If you stagger the front wheels, the lights will see "something" for a longer period of time and keep the timer from triggering. Meanwhile, you are gaining momentum and lowering ET at the expense of reaction time. Which of course can be free if you work the pedals well.
Ryan's got it right. I can't believe the staggered front tires have to be explained in this day and age. That was all a part of "Drag Racing 101" back when I was doing it in the 60's through the early 70's. Frank
Staggering wasn't really all that effective until the 5-tenths "Full Tree" came about. There was an article in a late 70's or early 80's in HRM that talked about how it was really just a gimmick until the 5-tenths tree allowed enough "go time" to build momentum without losing any gain through a poor reaction time. Think about it. With a 4-tenths pro tree there isn't enough wiggle room there to really gain much without killing your reaction time... And since 4-tenths trees and flag starts are/were primarily used for heads up racing there really wasn't much of an advantage to be had in the 50's and 60's. So you guys were nut balls!
Operations at ASS are down for the holiday weekend, so that's 4 days of Master Blaster minus what I have to devote to my wife. Lets see what we can get done.. All ready to cut the front end off, measured everything out, the left side is exactly 1 inch farther forward. Thinking I might keep the stagger unless i can figure a reason that will really effect handling.. Not going to be hitting the slalom in this beast but want to be safe.
Torched off the front end, left it long to see what kind of business was under the old clip job. Figured how far the wonky was and laid out my lines to true things up. Got the new frame stub mocked up ready for tomorrow.
Cause I'm the MASTER BLASTER drinking up the shasta, my voice sounds sweet cause it has to! Dont touch me cause I'm electric and if you touch me you'll get SHOCKED.
Yeah going to reuse as much as possible just clean it up make it functional. There is only a few sketchy things on this car. The original owner was pretty resourceful and I feel he did pretty good for what he had. It was definitely a racecar so you can see scars from its trial and errors. His welds are surprisingly good, I attribute that to the fact that he owned a trucking business and had to do a good share of heavy fab. I plan to add a little more "coolness" to it as it was definitely function before fashion, but in respect to that will make sure any fashion I add will be purposeful.
Made these gusset plates: Was going to make suspension mounts but could't manage to get new spring bushings on xmas weekend. Then decided that the springs (likely trailer springs) were to much of an unknown and most likely to stiff. So I plan to get new springs or have some made then make mounts accordingly. So till then just tacked the old ones on to make it a roller. So now I just have to come up with a spring rate.....
Dig this build, and all of a sudden it is March 10th, what the *#*#!! Cool ass project, rock on ~sololobo~
Glad to see the car is getting a new front end, driving this thing was CRAZY!!!!!!!!! anyways, congrats look forward to seeing it at round up
Need to order my new springs then put the motor back in it.. Been side tracked on a "quick" truck project I got.. but roundup is going to sneak up on me.
Its go time!! Ordered some parts this thing needs to run by the end of the month.. Got rid of the trailer springs Got it all assembled and about ready to tack Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
