BANJO interchangeability

Will the backing plates and everything from a 48 banjo rear bolt up to a 35 banjo by chance?

I know that 42-48 passenger are innerchangeable. Also 35-41 frames are basically the same. Try an inquiry to Speedway Motors. I bet they can tell you. Tom

 

I am thinking you have to use a 1/4 spacer to make it work. I could be wrong. Bolt pattern size should be the same from what I have read. Rod

Yes... The 32-48 banjo housing is the same.

 

I forgot to add, the spider gears are different on the earlier rear ends, so you have to have the correct combination of those parts also to make the swap work.

 

On axle interchange '35-48, the only limit is that you need to keep the right set of spider gears for the axles. Tooth counts changed about 1938, the inner differential case is tha same for all so you can just transplant the gears (be sure case is kept aligned as original). Also, you can find matching length axles for the commones size in both tooth counts. Axle tubes, backing plates, etc., no problems.
Remember that the side gaskets adjust preload and mesh, so measure their thicknesses and match those assuming you keep same inner case and bearings.

 

The banjo housings, the center section, are smaller in width from early 32-34, 35 and up are the same. Early 32 with round flange is the same as model A.

 

I thought the 42 - 48 were wider than the earlier ones?

 

Hot Rod Works is now making the kit to put the earlier 1932-1934 bells on the 1935+ center section. it's a neat way to keep the narrow bells and have the strength of a later V8 center.
