Wonderfull. Since I haul cars for a living these pics turns me on, probably have some kind of occupational injury. Just keep them coming

Caption says:

This is the production version of the Skyscraper operated by Commercial Carriers in the early '50's. I've seen photos of at least five of these. KAT and ARCO also built trucks that were similar in conception but based on IH or Ford componets.




W&K prototype "Skyscraper" Dodge


Around 1950, transport companies that operated in ILL and a few other states were restricted from using conventional equipment. This early effort by W&K was put together to comply with length and cargo regulations of those states.

 

These last two are not HAMB friendly, but worth a look anyway...

I have this one hanging up in my office. 1949 Chevrolet, "The Most Beautiful Buy of All"

 

That car and hauler are now in Speedy Bill Smiths collection. I don't think that DO Fronty has been off the trailer since 1938. Bob

 

It's interesting to note the various ways vehicles were shipped, depending on the factory and carrier: many were shipped without the hubcaps installed but others were shipped with the hubcaps (and often even the fenderskirts) in place. In a few photos, the cars were loaded with the bumpers and brackets removed (I presume to save space on the truck and make loading/unloading easier).

Every time I see vintage photos, I wonder if any HAMBers have the cars pictured now...or how many/which ones survived to be restored...or which ones might be lurking in barns/sheds/carports/what have you even now...

 

These trucks are really neat and they brought back memories. I had a brother-in-law that lived in Racine, Wi. And with over 50 years of visiting that area I saw some of the trucks hauling the Nashs from Kenosha to Milwaukee without any running gear or front clips so they could be installed in Milwaukee. I asked my brother-in-law about that and he said they did that for many years. He also asked if I had noticed all the old AMC cars sitting in the driveways around town? He told me that if you were employed at AMC you couldn't park in the company parking lots unless you were driving an AMC car!
