Projects Im getting Married! Project 46 ford begins!

So re routed exhaust, re bled brakes, fixed tail lights, drop axle and inch longer shackles by December. Trying to set my goals a little low and give myself a brake.

Oh, and instal shocks after installing drop axle.

 

Post #5 in Ryan's thread is exactly the pair I intend to run on the front.
I may buy a matching pair for the back and incorporate a bar across from one side to the other, and somehow work it into the small receiver hitch I intend to put in the bottom valence to pull a small motorcycle trailer.
I know, some think it's a sacrilege to put a hitch on a hot rod. Go back and check your little pages...

 

Hmm, I'll have to keep an eye on your progress. I love them on pre 42 cars but just haven't seen any I dig on newer models. Check out Pete and James they have a set like you referred to that have a cross bar I'm pretty certian.

 

And no hate on the hitch, I put the parallel leafs in the back of mine to make pulling something easier

it was a realy pretty pink/orange sunset on a scenic overlook in the middle of an Indian reservation so we stopped for a photo or two. sadly all we had was the disposable and it didn't realy grab the colors but its got that film "feel" to it so i like them. I havn't used film in years and years and it almost makes the photos feel nostalgic even though it was just a few weeks ago. I think so anyways, haha maybe there just crummy photos

so today i got my exhaust re routed again. this time i went to single exhaust tucked up into the frame on the passenger side with a kick down near the rear axle. it doesnt look super awesome as ive been making it up with clamps, exhaust pipe, random bends and flex pipe but this is exactly why i did it this way.

this is probably the 3rd or 4th time ive had to take it apart and tweak it, this is obviously the biggest change but this way i can move and tweak things until i know it works with out having to worry about welding in a new pipe or wasting money on having it done for me and routed funny.

i took the car out for the first time since getting home from the wedding after getting the exhaust put together again and hit some dirt roads along the river after it quit raining to see if everything checked out.

Its got a pretty massive leak at the improvised y pipe connection but interior sound is down quite a bit, the sound is better with all 8 cylinders pounding out one side and nothing seems to be hitting.

Nothing makes a rainy day better then tearing down the gravel and pulling donuts in the dirt

I also ran into many of the same problems with aftermarket parts-
I was able to run my duals up in the frame but have manual not auto trans- front drivers does look like a snake- think mine was made in 3 pieces- really close to the oil filter-

Im not sure if the brakes and valves being right under the floor is more in the way of the drivers side tucking into the frame or the steering box. It realy is awefuly tight for everything that makes it move for such a round car haha.

OK, so not really a car update. nothing to exciting to report on that end. just shaking it lose and then fixing it before it gets to cold to bother. BUT we did get our bazillion wedding photos a couple days ago and thought I'd add some to this post. Seeing as the thread was started with the wedding in mind.

I'll try to keep them car related but I'm sure I'll slip some with out the ford in there too haha.

Sarah had talked about how cool she thought it'd be to have the car for the engagement photos, then for the wedding, and then in bringing home kids and the big "photo op" type of things threw life. Something I hadn't thought about until the other day seeing pix of bobby's roadster and other cars that people have had in the family threw the years is seeing it change in the photos.

I had planned on building the car a certain way and calling it good but we all know how hot rods are. They aren't ever finished, I look forward to looking at the photos and seeing how it all changes and comes along

 

Congratulations!! Sarah is a special girl to be on board with old cars. Here's to a long life with her.

Thanks I think if anything the photos convinced me that painting it this spring is in fact a good idea haha. Hopefully in January I'll have real progress to report again.

Hey Tim....was going through some stuff at home just now and came across the wedding "program" outta my jacket pocket. Written in the margin was my handwriting. It was a vow Sarah said during the ceremony and I scribbled it down when she said it.
[All the vows were cool]
It says: "I vow to be riding in the passenger seat with the windows down and the radio up."
Hahaha...too cool

700 ish mile update. not as cool as Nicks 5k but whatever we can all be that cool haha.

Finally got my brakes sealed up after some trickiness to figure out were it was leaking/taking on air. going to bleed it another time or two and make sure i get all the air out 900%

Having had much time to mess with it outside of my days off and to be honest on my days off id rather be driving it. Hell the weather channel said it felt like 1 deg when I got up today for work and I still drove it the 15 minutes to work haha.

So at 700 ish miles I've found that it really likes to cruise in that 62-65 mph range, and ride wonderful on the highway. I drove my dads 2001 chevy pickup 60 miles and then drove the 46 for the return trip almost imediatly and on the highway they feel almost like the same vehicle.

the truck has a v6 and an 4 speed auto, its just a long bed work truck model and with the taller gears in the 46 it feels like it accelerates about the same. the 46 has better brakes and honestly even with out the front shocks on it rides a little smoother on the highway. the only real plus to the pickup is in town, in town the 46 is a little rough to get around corners at lower speeds and it realy does not enjoy the bumpy tore up streets.

I figured that most of us are fairly familiar with that kind of truck so you'd realistically know how it compaired.

I have no idea what its getting for mileage as I haven't bothered to check after driving in the monsoon to omaha when i got maybe 10 mpg. but it was in some brutal wind/rain/hills.

I seem to be comfortable driving the car in low 30 deg temps on the highway and today its much colder and in town wasnt bad.

I messed with the exhaust some more and ended up tucking one smithy up into the X member where it would have been stock and scabbed together a Y pipe as the holes wouldn't allow both pipes to pass. it sounds better then the duals did and feels the same driving it so i dont think i mind the lack of duals other then the wasted cash on buying two mufflers and pipes etc.

so yeah, nothing to exciting just driving it as much as I can until it gets cold enough to justify setting up a garage heater and tearing into it over the snowy season. I know I've got work to do but I spent so much time on it that i feel like it'd be a waste if I didn't drive it as much as I can before the crappy weather sets in for a couple months.

So what work is getting tackled the winter?

In January after we get back from the honeymoon we are going to pull the seats out and start in on the interior. I'm happy with the carpet I have now so I'll pick the front or back seat and make up some patterns and get to it! i'll probably do everything other then the headliner this winter as i hear it helps to have some heat stretching them out when installing them so maybe itll get made but not put in? guess we'll see.

Also I plan to get my doors and deck lid adjusted back to where they should be and start hammering some dents out and well as replacing or straightening out the drivers side fender. I had a line on a good fender but I haven't heard anything about it for a while so I think ill pull the grill out and start trying to tug this one back to where it should be. Then in the spring when it gets warm enough we will spray it shiney black

Should make for a fun spring after I spent last spring thrashing on the car instead of cruising it

After that Sarah and I are moving and it's kind of up in the air how things will progress from there. Most likely the car will be put in the back corner of my friends garage under some sheets for 6 months to a year until we land somewhere, and then find a place with a garage. I'm sure it'll be hectic and prolly bum me out having it moth balled but I guess itll give me time to save up for the next round of thrashing when it gets to come home.

To get it as low as I want it to be, and to be able to drive it threw the bends as aggressive as I would like I'm going to swap over to a chassis eng mii front end which should drop the car a good 5 or 6 inches with out drop spindles or anything and then Ill add some blocks in the rear and swap wheels/tires. Im thinking a fatter tire in back on a large window halibrand style mag unpolished with some sort of small kidney bean/spindal mount-ish looking mag up front. Kind of a Fat Jack on the street style.

Thats the plan anyways....
