I was told that there are afew guys on here that are building bubble top cars. The ones like Roth and the rest of those crazy builders would build. No Im not talking Impala's. Stand up and show your selfs!
The bubble top deal reminded me of this "cartoon article" from Rod & Custom about the Mysterion. I was under the impression that Roth did his own glass bubbles.
i like this idea. lets get em all together in one post. lets me see if i have any pics of some saved on the ole puter matchine...
I'm workin on a 32 roadster with a bubble top. The car may be taking a new direction. The biggest thing that won't change is I plan on driving the car. The car is sorta mothballed for the summer. I need to get my 34 ready for Bonneville. The plan is to have the bubble top done for Detroit then drive it to the Lonestar round up. Clark
I thought Ed Roth made the mold and broke a few before farming it out to a glass shop. There is a photo of the mold in front of his shop on the internet. Ghostworks, who blew your top?????? There is a guy down here that makes them......
But Officer......it has two headlights....... OK, but HOW did you blow the top????????????????????????????????
Bubbletop cars just naturally are in their own category, aren't they? Yours looks good and to me it looks right, like a show car built in '64-'65 out of a wrecked T-Bird. Lots of nice work. I'd be interested to see more pics if you've got 'em.
There's no mold process for a bubble top, it's more of a template. To blow a hemispherical round shape, a table with an air fitting in it is constructed. The plastic sheet is heated, then clamped to said table under the template (round hole for a hemisphere, oval hole for more of a jet canopy look). Air pressure is applied and the bubble begins to rise! For the record, Darryl Starbird was Mr. Bubbletop, not Roth
Thanx for the kind words guys.. Once the hamb board figures out my pictures, maybe they will stop rejecting them Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
