Been curious about this ever since I joined H,A.M.B. years ago. Some of us list our hometown and state, some just the section of state, some just the state, and some either no location or an attempt, successful only sometimes, at a humorous, but useless answer.
Why is this? Most times I/we don't give a rat's ass where you are, but other times it may have a bearing on the subject of the thread and your comment(s) on it.
Are you doing this anonymous location bit due to concerns about thieves and such, or privacy concerns, or what?

Everyone else can see their correct locations.........Some just have a filter on so YOU can't know where they live..........

  3. I think it's all of the above reasons you stated.

At one time I listed my city as :The Electric City and I kept getting questions about what that meant,,just got tired of replying to the question. HRP

    FYI,,,The Electric City,,

Why is Anderson called the "Electric City"? In the late 1800s, Anderson boasted numerous textile mills. Anderson engineer William Whitner produced a way for electricity to be conducted by wires to these mills using hydroelectric power. Anderson was the first city in the United States to have a continuous supply of electric power.

Some people put funny ones as a joke, and some people choose to just not list a location. It's a privacy thing, which everyone has right to do. There's nothing wrong with someone not wanting to display where they live.

I understand the privacy thing, but also think that we at least should give our state... as the OP said, " it may have a bearing on the subject of the thread and your comment(s) on it."

I agree location is relevant to some topics. I thinks mine's set to west Chicago. Vague but gives geographic area. State as a minimum would be nice. My shop is in another part of the state looks like every other metal building in farm country, I never work with the door open. I like the guys with auto signs and stuff like "ford parking only". Might as well hang a sign that says "come steal my tools the garage is full"

  10. Hi Dave, I find that alot who post give thier location in comments of where they go or events in town etc.I do find it relevant where people are in regards to things they say, comment on or ask, especally as im in New Zealand.JW

Hell, I'm probably not careful enough with my information. I guess I like the idea of prospective employers doing a Google search on me and seeing that I can behave myself on the internet. I figure if someone is nice online, they can't be all bad in person.

I put S.F. Bay Area so all the yahoos back east will think I live in San Francisco and make stupid comments.

San Francisco Bay Area is 9 counties, 7 million people, and 7,000 square miles.

Bay Area is close enough. Random strangers on the internet do not need to know where I live.

  15. Some people are afraid that their boss will find out what they do in their spare time. I personally wasn't worried while I was still working, who in their right mind would admit to having a name like porknbeaner. ;)

Others are afraid that someone will come and get the or come and steal their stuff, and still others just like the anonymity.

Everyone should reast assured that if someone wants to find out about you or find you either one it can be done. Hell folks have found me on here that I didn't figure would even look for me here, it happens.

That said there was a cop from a southern state that had words with me and offered to come up here and put a hurt on me. So I offered to send him my address. he said he didn't need me to because he was an officer of the law. Then posted my old address in the PM which gave me a chuckle for two reasons, one it is a different town than listed in my bio and two because it is doubtful that he was going to make it out of the neighborhood alive. ;)

  16. If I don't want anyone to find me I turn off the lights in the garage.

  17. Whats next? Real picture confirmed as the avitar? Address? Phone number? Although those would cut down on the keyboard cowboys

When I'm in the classifieds it helps me make the decision on getting serious about what they are sellling because of the location (shipping).

  19. Exactly. But I think that you are supposed to put a location in the class ad aren't you?

  20. Yep. Its a rule there.

Some of us are a little paranoid, aren't we?
Geez, it's not like we're putting down our bank account numbers when we are saying where we are.
Mind you, I have been living in London, England for the past year, trying to stop a band of persistent HAMBers who have tracked me down.............

    Hahaha

Oh yeah, and I used to own the chopped 37 tudor in my avatar too.

  22. Reminds me of a guy I used to work for. When asked about his weekend he'd reply "That's none of your F***ing business, and if you weren't my friend I wouldn't tell you that much".
That said, most of us at least have a clue or two in the location. Mine is obvious once you Google it.

Right? the more threads I see on stolen cars the less specific I tend to be about where I keep my ride.

  25. It's pretty ovious where I live.............
