1937 through 1939 Fords

Sometimes overlooked, sometimes unloved, often unrecognized, I think the styling is very interesting and I'm appreciating them more and more. Cool to see how the iconic 40 evolved. What do you think?

IMHO, '39 DeLuxes are the best looking of the bunch. Your pictures prove it. (BTW, including '40's).

I like 'em.... Partial to the '37 and '39 deluxe.

 

I'm really digging my '39 sedan. I think they have a great look. I do hate that most you see are more of the '90s street rod variety but I guess that's when they become popular.

 

I agree that it's a very interesting evolution to study.

I read that both Edsel Ford and Bob Gregorie were boat guys, and I think they were going for a boat-like prow as those several year models were designed. I think that they really got it right on the '39 Deluxe -- the grille rolls under, very much like the prow of a boat.

The '40 Standard was, of course, just a re-trimming of the '39. The '40 Deluxe, I suspect, was an attempt to visually lengthen the '39 front end as much as possible. To many people, the sharper/pointier front end of the Deluxe isn't as attractive as the '39 on which it was based.

 

I'd really like to have a '39 Deluxe Coupe. Most of these Coupes died on the Stock Car tracks all across America. I can remeber Saturday nights at the Danbury, Ct. Racearena were they would total a lot of 1932-40 Fords. Sad, but that is why they are worth what they are today. Bob

 

'37's seem to be the bastard year, sometimes they are considered the ugliest car Ford ever made. I think they are too squat in the rear and would benefit better if the rear was carried over from the '36. In '38 they got a little longer rear. Not sure if I would have bought this car if it wasn't my Uncle's old ride - Fryguy

 

I drove a 38 Standard tu-door for a few years and loved the style. I appreciate this under seen car a bunch. `sololobo~

 

Did they make two models in '37? The '36 three passenger convertible is much nicer that the one with the stretched top with jump seats. Bob

 

I love the 37 cars, this is one I built in the early 90's bad picture from a scan.

 

Actually Yes, they made 4 convertibles in '37 they made a Coupe Convertible(3 window) with a rumble seat. The Club Coupe convertible which is what is below. It has a full backseat, not really jumpseats and a large trunk. They made a Convertible Sedean ( 4 dr convertible) and they also made a roadster which was the same as the convertible but with no side windows.

 

As far as i'm concerned ford never made an ugly car back then. I like them all.

 

I alwayed liked the 37 Sedan when i was a kid,but settled for a 39 Standard.

38 DeLuxe for me. have a coupe, cabriolet, cabover, & sedan.

 

38 deluxe/39 standards are my favorites.

 

Mine has a 1938 title but has a 37 front end !!

 

I think a lot of cars got the 39 deluxe,or 1940 front end swapped on by Hot Rodders .The cars may still be around....just disguised as 40"s.
