Or one for each wheel! 140bhp between the four of them. It might be a slight challenge co-ordinating four clutches and the shift action of four gearboxes, though

2. One that has come to mind recently, Take a slant six and stand it up straight! Anyone ever done that?

How about supercharging an otherwise stock straight 8 in the manner of the McCulloch on a flathead ford. It's almost a fixed cost modification if you have any sort of fabrication skills. A supercharger costs about the same whether you put it on a straight 8 or a sbc. You could even use a turbo.
Or select a 4 banger with a stout bottom end and large cooling passages, lower the cr a bit and boost it up to 20 psi with a supercharger and intercooler.

6. Since so many unusual engines usually equates to high $$ for motor AND tranny rebuild/adapter, why not think of it in terms of what tranny you would like to run then see what it can made to adapt to? Although I'm an avid fan of the flathead Ford, I'm going to run a 4.3 V6/auto combo in my present 40 Ford p-up project (so the wife can drive it, she requested an automatic, and it was cheap - :) ), and a 322 nailhead/5-speed in the following 32 5-win project (I love my 5-speeds and an adapter, flywheel, and p-plate came with the deal so that was a no brainer).

Just a different way of looking at it in terms of cost and practicality ....

8. But keep the electrics and fuel systems separate and the chances of having a total loss of power are remote...

Which 4.3? A Chevy Vortec?

Just a thought ... You could use a carbureted Ford 3.8 and AOD transmission and keep it looking old school (no electronics except distributor module) and Ford powered. You can also combine a later Ford 4.2 block with 3.8 heads and intake and do the same thing, with a bit more power.

Ford is coming out with a super OT motor for the Escort: a turbocharged, 1000cc, I-3 (yep, that's a 3 cylinder), direct injected, variable valve, etc etc. that makes more power and torque than their current stock 1600cc I-4.

I remember talking to a guy at GG Nashville a few years back who had an I-4 diesel from a Chevette of all things (Isuzu?) in his fenderless Vicky. Claimed 42 mpg interstate. Gary

The Lincoln LS is rear wheel drive with a 4 litre V8. They have been around for a while and older ones are cheap. Then there are rear drive luxury imports with V8 and V12 engines like Jaguar, BMW and Mercedes. The Lincoln and Jaguar have a lot in common since Ford owned Jaguar from 1989 to 2007.

Couple of guys have mentioned the BOP/Rover 215. I had one in a '29 A CCPU with 5 spd - plenty of power to get on down the road, and with a pair of Smithy's, good 2x pipes sound.
Sold the truck and went to the other end of Olds - a 455 with Muncie going in a fenderless coupe. Pretty wide engine (Not sure you could run a hood.), but about same length as an sbc. But I wanted torque with minimum speed parts.
Couple of others have mentioned the Mopar slant 6. I've never owned one, but have heard many say that they are just about indestructible. Prolly a tad long for an A tho.
Something to consider in your choice: where your car will be driven. If just pretty much local, anything goes. Short tow home if you break it. If a lot of long road trips, think about possible repairs in BFE if you've got a really off-the-wall engine. Or if a common engine but a veritable hand grenade of speed parts. POINT: servicability is important. The more reliability you need, the closer to common engine and stock internals it better be. Needing a rocker for a 1953 Henway a thousand miles from home would be a bummer.
I vote for the 300 inline 6. They can make good power with a intake change, headers and a better cam. Unfortunatly they dont make any performance heads for them that I know of. Or you could go with a 225 slant 6. They also can make good power and they dont look like your run of the mill inline 6. Both of these engines will run forever and are very tough.
I AGREE WITH T'RANTULA, I RAN A 300 SIX IN MY 27 HUDSON HOT ROD, RAN GOOD WITH LOTS OF POWER, GOOD UPGRADES AVAILABE FOR THEM, I RAN A FOUR BBL, AND ALSO HAD THE TRIPOWER INTAKE FOR IT.

If you really want something different do not forget GMC V12 truck motors.... Although rare they were essentially two GMC Big V6's... No real speed parts at all, but its a modern V12 that is reliable and a torque monster!

I think this idea is cool and economical:rolleyes: too.... Polished up and carbureted the Jag kinda looks like an "OFFY"... They are regularly cheap on cragislist here in Ca.... Oh and YES, many old Jags come with a TH400 behind them....
Here you may even buy the right car and get a rear to un-cage and use too.... One man's opinion...

Also any V16 motors.... Marmon, Cadillac, Auto-Union, BMW, Rolls Royce, etc... All unusual but cool in a hot rod.

Different...but fun!!!

Pontiac 194.5" from a 1962 Tempest in my 9 year old son's 26 roadster.

Helps with a few issues:

Starter IS on the left, but facing forward,

Basic stuff is all Poncho 389 (head, pistons, valves, exhaust manifold and such)

BOP pattern for trans, only minor machining needed to retro your choice of gearbox.

Aluminum Rolls inline 6 suggested earlier is a great motor. I built one for a guy, it was sweet and smooth. plenty of torque moving the 400000 pound car it was in (they used them in tanks I hear)

I have a 4 litre Rover/Buick Aluminum V8 for sale if you want. running $300
