Sbc w/lake style headers popping sound on passenger side?

Only on acelaration on slow speeds. Makes a popping sound thru right side header? No loss of power. No oil leaks. Checked for exhaust leak and found none? Bad wire/plug? Ideas lemme know thanx!

Check for intake leak with starting fluid around the intake manifold.

Compression check on that side.

 

Check for bad plug wire. Old or "cheap" plug ores allow spark to jump mom wire to wire. Just a posibility.

 

What Dane said. I just had a vortec intake leaking oil from the lifter valley. Couldn't figure out why the exhaust sounded funny untill it started using oil and fouling two plugs. Fixed the intake with new gaskets, exhaust sounds fine again.

 

Cool. Thanx guys for all the help gonna look into it this weekend. Hopefully its just a plug or intake leak. Any other suggestions/advice?

You sure you dont have a header gasket leak?

 

Some of them are hard to find. I would get someone to hold a rag over the pipe tightly and listen at the flange. With it running of course, should only take a few seconds to find the leak if there is one.

Telltale signs of a gasket leak are white-grey streaks on the head surface around the gasket, may be hard to find it it blows out on the bottom side of the flange.

Well I changed out the header gaskets a few days ago and still had the popping noise. But you can't hear it on idle. Only on acelaration. Like taking off from a complete stop it starts when the motor is shifting thru its rpms. I'd say between 20-35mph is when its the loudest and consistent with the engine. At highway speeds it fades out. Only time I can hear it is when the engine is slowing down from a higher rpm on the highway.

Some symtoms sound like a worn cam lobe. Only takes a few minutes to check.

 

Might be a fouled spark plug. I'd check the plugs first, it's cheap.

 

What brand of headers do you have?

Good idea, tackle the free 'n easy stuff first. Look for a bad wire (look at it at night to rule arcing), throw a vacuum gauge on it, look for a bouncing needle.

last car I had that made a popping noise that like that turned out to have a burnt valve.

 

Well there it is, I thought that was a distinct possibility.

 

Changed out the header gaskets to rule them out. Did notice that last valve looked white? Compared to the other 3 . Can that be and indication of a burnt valve?

describe your induction system to us, maybe something is up with carb(s)? Could be a vacuum leak on that intake runner, dirty jet in the carb, lots of stuff.

 

307 stock sbc rebuilt about 2years ago running a batwing repo air cleaner with 4 barrel eldebrock 650 cfm carb, regular hei distribuitor, reg plugs and wires and performer intake manifold.

It`s funny that this has come up.
I was out in my buddies duece and it was popping out the driverside. He`s running a 6-pac (but only running off the center carbs) with points. I think his carbs are toast and need rebuild. I don`t think the open lake headers are helping any thing either.

I would pull the intake and replace the gaskets to start.

Culprit = 2 burnt valves! Oh well time to go to the maqchine shop!

 

I know this probably sounds like a stupid question to some, but what exactly burns on the valve ? aside from the symptoms, how does this adversely affect the engine? Thanks

The valve face itself burns away, so valve is no longer round and doesnt seal. usually due to a worn valveguide. The guide gets egg shaped and the valve doesnt always come back down in its seat. When the exlosion happens it burns away the exposed face of the valve. Hope this helps

 

Thanks cigarcaptain, this makes sense.. I am surprised the valves could deteriorate that much. What is it about lakes headers that could exacerbate this problem? Sorry to th OP for hijacking.

I wouldn't say the tube manifolds exacerbate the problem - just more noticeable with them.
