Event Coverage Atlanta Speedshop $10,000 Drags

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by seadog, Oct 13, 2012.

  1. I just got home from the $10,000 drags at Atlanta Dragway... didn't see any other thread, so I'll start one. Things are probably still going on down there, I had to leave early, feel free to post onto this thread if you have pics.

I took very few shots of the actual racing, there were a lot of Camaro's, Mustangs and others. 'Just not my cup of tea. I was hoping to see many old cars, and while there were some, I was dissappointed that there weren't more.

That said, it was a good event; weather was stellar and I had a great time. 'Hope they have it again next year.

  8. Yup! Thanks for the great shots. It was a great day.

  9. Tom, I actually took a photo of your deuce 5 window without it registering with me that it was your car. Man ... I wished we would have connected. Next year, I'd like to figure out a fool-proof way for HAMB members to connect at this event. I know many attended who didin't meet up with each other.

As for this 1st event, I felt it came off pretty well. I'm sure there will be many refinements and changes. Elaine (jetboatmama), Julius Hughes III, and many others worked hard to pull this thing off. I'm sure they will get lots of feedback and figure what needs to be added and subtracted.

Here's the photo I took of your car. I can't believe I didn't recognize it because I went ape over the rebuild photos you posted on the OFC.

I'll be posting lots of photos I took. Since you already started this thread, I'll
post 'em here as I sort through them .......... :)

  10. That's a bitching coupe for sure. Hawt Rod. I like it!

  11. Here are some of the photos I took.

    First up, race 'em cars!

Tom took a fine photo of Josh's (Tudor) car and posted it above. Josh ran an amazing 10.68 @ 127.44 mph in the 1/4! Keep in mine, this monster is driven on the street regularly.

    Here's Josh prepping the Can O'Worms .....

    Can O'Worms staging .......

Tom also posted a great photo of Tony's (Dog_Patch) "A" Coupe. Tony was looking the part running zoomies and pie crust slicks! In spite of having a hard time hooking up on the start, he still ran a 12.59 et at over 111 mph! Here's Tony (Dog_Patch) staging ........

There was a good showing in The Gasser Shoot Out. Here are a few shots ........

This funny car didn't fare well later on that evening, hitting the wall at about mid-track!

This Willys was cruising the pits. It had a flawless paint job!

    Great ol' F1!

Yeah ... there were even a few boats in the pits. I kept waiting for the announcer to call them to the staging lanes, but it never happened .......

    Nice old rail ........

Julius Hughes III looking over his new Zot VI Top Fueler. This event was its maiden run. It made a lot of fire and noise, and went down the track fast ... in other words, it did what it was suppose to. Julius is the owner of the Atlanta Speed Shop. He was chief organizer of this resurrected event. His father was a legendary racer from the 60s.

Here is a really cool '55 Chevy funny car. Nt only is it a beautiful car, it made one helluva a pass later on during the evening after most people had left (note: gotta stick around to the end ... you never know what'll happen :D).

A couple of hot rod girls .........

    Man, I love this stuff!

Here's the lady herself: Elaine Hughes Jape (jetyboatmama). She worked tirelessly for days to organize this event. However, here, on the day of the event, she started to take a quick nap while talking to some friends ...... jest kidding! :D Actually, I never saw someone with so much energy! A great lady!
If you want to see some great photos from the golden age of drag racing, check out her HAMB photo album.

Car Show and racing photos to come later on this evening! Stay tuned to this station ..........

  20. Toby, sorry I missed you. I wondered if I'd run into you, but it's a big place. Agree that next year we need at least a banner so folks can meet up (a motor home with scantily clad hostesses would be even better, I'll get right on it).

I left too soon, but being an old fart I don't like being on 85 in a fiberglass car with no bumpers after dark. You got some good pics, keep 'em coming.

Ed the cacklefest for the Hundley & Boggs didn't go very well. On the push start the clutch wouldn't release so it could not be fired. Some of the other hambers in attendence was rooman driving the Back Yard Guys nostalgia FED, Quain Stott in his grey primer Willys, Marty Harrison(fuel55) owner of the Hundley & Boggs AA/FD. Joe Boggs one the original owners came down from WV. The '55 Chevy F/C is owned by Richard Hartman owner of Harman Machine Works/Horton Race Cars.

  26. The funny cars had a rough time of it. This one smacked the wall at about mid-track.

Great pictures! I had to leave early but I thought the turnout was great!

Hope to bring my dragster next year.

I did get to catch almost all the nitro cars in their warmup.

The best one was still the hundley and boggs fed.

Does anyone know who owns the blown 66 Chevelle?

The red Mercury is Ether's 4 door to 2 door conversion. Drove a fair distance to the event.

  30. Brad - I am glad you didn't put up that video yesterday - I would have watched it 1000 times by now.
