Running Fat Fender Cars... Fenderless?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Captain Neckbeard, Oct 12, 2012.

  1. Last night as my brother and I were prepping my '41 Plymouth for primer, the idea started getting kicked around of running fat fender cars without their rear fenders. I know this is not the norm an I probably made a couple of you traditionalists gag a bit, but I was just wondering if anyone has seen or run one without fenders and what your opinion of it was??

"looks like ass" seems like an appropriate description.

  3. +1, fuck no. Keep the fenders.

  4. Back in the early 80's I remember seeing a 35 Ford coupe that looked pretty good sans fenders,,and then there was a chopped top non fendered Chrysler Airflow.

There have been a few more but they quickly disappeared,,fat fendered cars need fenders. HRP

Generally the idea is to IMPROVE upon the looks of a car, right?

BAD idea. If you want to see what an old Plymouth looks like without rear fenders, look up the Ramchargers' drag race coupe, "High and Mighty".

Please don't....it will kill the car?

  9. Well, I primed the fenders already and am painting them tomorrow ;)

Just wanted to hear everyone's opinions.

I've only seen one I think pulled it off well. A 40 Ford coupe that had fabricated side panels for a streamlined bonneville look.

Dead guy! I miss hanging out in the Northwest everytime I think of it! Pretty hard to find around here... Oh, just say NO to fenderless fat fendered cars!

  20. I was really lucky... I lived down in Oregon up until 2 years ago. I was just a short distance from my 3 favorite breweries, Rogue, Deschutes Brewing Co. and McMenamins!

There is a white haired guy near here who has a 37 Chevy 2-door Sedan he runs without front or rear fenders. Red car with a nice interior, nice wheels/tires, lots of bling under the hood... It's not entirely bad...

Only one I can think of that gets a pass is the Sparks & Bonney '37 Willys coupe. It's even an earlier car and it still looks kind of goofy to me.

Out of beer here, drinking some Bushmill's tho. ;)

I agree with everything that's been said so far...no fenders on a fat fendered car almost always looks terrible.
But I think Posies '47 Fleetliner might be an exception. Not everyone's cup o tea, but kinda cool, IMO.

  27. I have seen some old like in the very first decade of drag racing old fat fender cars without fenders, they were usually being flat towed to the local track and looked like they were painted with a broom, more often than not they were numbered with electrical tape.

So I guess if you are building a first decade door slammer it is appropriate, but you had better have the shit to back it up because if a car looks like hell it had better run like a scalded ape.

Jesus H titty fucking Christ in a sidecar, that is totally repugnant (IMO). Talk about turning a Chevrolet into some kind of screwed up stretched out VW bug!
I'm going to lose sleep over that one!

    No, no, no and no.
Don't even think about running without fenders.
    No, really, don't do it.
