Been neglected lately, time to get back to work!

Messin around with some editing crap

 

Clearly, the location of the pitman arm will not work with my split bones..Can anyone with experience inform me on how to go about this.. I could bend it around the wishbone, but will it change the ratio or efficiency of the box?

It will change it some, but shouldn't be a big deal.

 

Looks to me like you only have to bend it in about 1/2" - 3/4" to clear the bone. That little of a bend shouldn't effect the ratio enough to even notice.

Nice fix and the twisted arm looks cool too

 

NOT SAFE !!! looks to be you only heated a short area of a forging and completly changed the grain direction as well by twisting it this will fail get another arm heat the entire part ORANGE HOT slowly bend the in a smooth arch inward to a dog leg shape to clear the front bone with out twisting it with heat on it as you bend it you will probably need a second person to do this.Just dont want you have this fail on the 5 o clock free way @ 75 mph.

 

Appreciate the input, You are probably right. After I twisted it, I began thinking of just how much I compromised Its Integrity. I will look further into it. But at least for now, I can get the car steering around for mock up and stuff. Again, thank you.

 

Anyone else want to chime in? All I need to make now is a steering hoop and find a steering shaft nut, and I'll be in business.

Still a work In progress,but here is a steering arm I started tonight.

 

I am a Mechanical Engineering student, not that that means I know anything. BUT I would recommend contacting a local heat treat company about your steering arm, they can probably heat treat and stress relive it for you and make it stronger than it was when you started.

I really don't see an issue with what you did, it was forged piece to start with. People drop forged axles all the time without issue. If you let it cool slowly the worst you did was make it softer, if you quenched it then you might have made it brittle which would be bad.

The issue is not the heat ,its the point wherw you bent
It to the 90degrees ,there the force applied to the
Arm is on a weak spot.
Hard for me to explain in english..
