I have a slightly newer 440 in my 64 Fury that has a pretty good vibration when I neutral rev it. I'm told the narrower 1" balancer (which is what is on this engine) goes on a steel crank. And that combo should have no balance weights on the torque converter, but this one does. So, before I cut the weights off, is there an easy way to make sure I have a steel crank still in it? Thank you
If it is a steel crank it should have the thinner uniform shaped balancer. The correct torque converter should have no external weights on it,thus your vibration.I'm not sure if you can just remove the weights or if you have to change the converter out.
Steel cranks have a wide (1/4-3/8") flat parting line. Cast cranks have a narrow, sharp parting line. Look on the flange where the flexplate bolts on, or you may have to remove the pan to be sure. Cast Forged
Before I remove the weights I need to be certain it's a steel crank. It could be a cast crank and it's the balancer that's wrong and not the converter I understand how to tell with the crank out. This car's all together
How long has it been vibrating? Start with the basics---if it has a belt driven fan(especially with a thermal clutch),try removing it & see if it stops the vibration.
the Chrysler manual says all 440 engines were cast crankshafts therefore externally balanced has the crank been changed or the torque converter?
Thats not true the early ones up to roughly 1973 ish were forged steel cranks, the later ones were all cast. My bad I thought you knew yours was a steel crank motor, yes you need to find that out first.
Well, it's supposed to be a steel crank motor. I'm now trying to make sure it still has the steel crank before I grind the weights off the converter....(which I'm already in the process of doing-I hope I'm not wasting my time doing it)
