You are really getting this down. Can't wait to see what the "real" car will look like after you get through practicing on all these other ones!!!!!! HAHA.

What amazes me is how much a well-done chop, skirts, and lowering does to transform the chubby, pudgy-looking stock Merc! The effect is way more than the sum of its parts — it's almost magical. Definitely brings out their "inner Zephyr!"

That chop is righteous. '39 and '40 chopped Mercs are so cool- quite possibly my favorite customs.

Of course not. I am very pleased how it turned out on my car. :)
Will be one beautiful early kustom here.

I think Tims pic from Riks website is very close to the direction of style.

I agree Jeff, I feel that Merc would look better with running boards. That doesn't mean I dont like it without them though.

Can't wait to see this car finished!!

Curb feelers. There is one on the rear fender skirt as well.

Thanks, Rik. Never seen them like that before — a loop instead of a long spring or wire.

I still haven't really understood how they work. George Barris 1941 Buick and others have the same. I have only seen them on the pre -49 kustoms, but maybe they were used later.

They keep you from rubbing your tires.

More importantly on a lowered car, they helped you avoid scraping the fender or skirt on the curb!

    Don't ask how I know.

Of course I know how a regular curb feeler works. :p
It's just this (looks to be) very rigid version I don't get. Looks like it will ruin the sheet metal by getting scraped against the curb.

Funny, this came up in another thread about a month ago.

I remember seeing these on cars in the '50s. It was a coil spring, kinda like a screen door spring, doubled on itself with both ends attached to a bracket. I have no idea why they would have been preferable to the straight wire variety.

Man, there's just something special about that 36! One of my favorite early custom pics!
