I had to pull my motor and whilke it is out I am going to upgrade a few things, one thing I will do is re paint the thing. It was chevy orange, and I like chevy orange but alomost every sbc I see locally is that color....my body is GM dark cherry and I want something to work with that. So my thoughts are silver... so does anyolne have silver colored motors? I really like pontiac metalic blue but I dont feel it will match my paint...
Silver is a very nice color, I would definatly put a 392 hemi in your dark cherry car. The gold valve covers will make a nice contrast!
I have seen silver engines in cars and trucks in my time. I am not sure how it will look especially if there is a lot of chrome around it, but maybe someone has a pic or two for you.
Chrysler painted all their engines silver from the twenties to the early fifties. Doesn't do much for their looks but makes them easy to work on and shows up oil leaks.
that is one of my fears...I will be adding a new oil pan gasket and new val;ve cover gaskets... here is a pic of what it looked like orange and here is a pic from here on the hamb with a sbc painted pontiac metalic blue.....
Use Hemi Silver...........exhaustive laboratory tests have proven beyond doubt that the use of Hemi Silver (NOT flathead silver or polyhead silver) on ANY engine will boost the horsepower and torque output by at least 15% with no other changes. Ray
I have thought about silver too, but it seems to take away from the chrome and aluminum on the engine. For your car, how about a shade of maroon that compliments the body? (would hide oil a little better too)
i have a quart of nasons 2k urethane cherry red metalic single stage, my fear was that it would seem like I tried to match and missed....that was what I was going to use.
I like a contrasting color on a block. It lets the accessories stand out yet the block remains strongly in the background.
interior right now is... original tan mohair seat, and a marron vinly door and kick panels....I have several yards of a marron marine vinyl for when I am ready to do the seat, and re do the door panlels.... oh and grey carpet. Dash will be black.
There's some pics here. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=712197&highlight=pet+project&page=3 Wish I could bring the pisc here for you.
We painted the 472 cad in my old 4x4 silver with black valve covers. Used vht engine paint. Looked great, and held up very well through the mud and heat. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Try hammertone silver. I use it on my race motors. I buy it at Walmart and it holds up very well. Dave
Raw aluminum (or at least a similar color-this block and heads are actually aluminum) looks super clean. All of the colors around it stand out in a good way. Sent from my DROID device using the TJJ mobile app
This is true. My first car was a 1949 Dodge with flat head six. I had it rebuilt and painted it Hemi Silver and even the fluid drive tranny seemed more responsive ! One winter it actually spinned the rear tires. This was in Illinois in the snow. Possibly shaving the hood, trunk and door handles made it more aerodynamic and that helped some. Seems like every week someone asks about painting their SBC engine. Orange is a good choice and considering all the other colors used may be quite rare.
I think a charcoal gray, it would be dark enough to set off the accessories, but far enough off that it would not look like you were trying to match the body color.
