Surprised the California boys and won the NHRA 1964 Nationals AA/A Class. Julius made 5 runs under the AA/A class record of 9.55 at 160.71 which he had previously set in 1963 with a bored 30over Chevy 283 ci = 287 ci. The Chevy engine was stroked to 341 ci for the 1964 win to beat the Big Chryslers

With the 327 not yet available, hot rodder and aftermarket companies knew how to gain lots of cu inches out of the little 283's. Looks like the motor is sporting one of those Pete Robinson style blowers. Was this a direct drive car?

  5. Cool observation regarding the blower. Julius and Elaine (jetboatmama) Hughes were friends and associates of Pete Robinson.

As for the car being a direct drive car, maybe jetboatmama can elaborate on that. That's a good question. I don't know.

Here are more photos of the car .........

I'm pretty sure this is a view of the same engine. That is Elaine Hughes (jetboatmama) kneeling. If I'm not mistaken, the engine went into their next car, a dragster. This is a good view of the supercharger. Here again, maybe she can elaborate.

  7. That's a cool picture!

Here's a photo I just stole from her photo album. Obviously, the two photos were taken about the same time.

Remember the BC comic strip by Johnny Hart? Thor, Fat Broad etc. Thats where the ZOT anteater came from.

ZOT is the sound the anteater character made when it made a kill. I believe some of the original fighter jet radar guidance systems were called Zot boxes. Also the mascot at Cal Irvine. All based on the charcter from the BC comic.

Now back to an urelated pic from the drags.

I think this is the Orange County Metal Processing car that Norm Weekly drove, not Tony Nancy

  24. It is, but the source from which I retrieved the photo claimed it was Tony Nancy driving. I could very well be wrong. Thanks! :)

These guys flogged the altered classes to the very end. They were succesful with an altered in pro-comp as well.

  28. That would have been my guess, but was not sure. Must be Stormin' Norman. Merek would know. ;)

The shot IS from Dover ... The car was owned and driven by Dick Doyle (Blown Hearse ) .. That day the track had payed a wheelstander to put on a show ... but couldn't get the car to wheelie ... so they told Dick they would pay him every time he stood it up ... So he did !!! Every time ....
The car lives in Ct ... It gets taken out every once in a while ... pretty much as it was in the 60s ... Injected 427 BBC
