VW 1.9 TDI. Kennedy adapter plate to a 700R4. Unusual. Flame-on.

  3. The Ford motor is WIDE, also ugly.

I for one like it. But I'd be inclined towards a 5-speed, and I'd build the engine as an M-TDI: quite doable as it's basically a mechanical-pump diesel anyway.

  5. So does the quad 4......but that's a little newer :D.

I might do one with a T56 6-speed behind it, if fuel prices keep going up.

Take out your rear-end and install a Porsche Carrera turbo charged 6 with transaxle and use your old engine bay for a trunk. 400 HP @ 7400, 0 to 60: 4.2, top speed 185, 26 mpg. Not too shabby.

Agreed this is a great motor considering it's size and weight plus it puts out over 200 plus HP in stock form. Somewhat unusual for hot rods on this side of the pond but over there some consider it to be Europe's answer to the SBC. Cheap, plentiful, and easy to hop up. Just think. It is GM's second oldest V8 design. In continuous production for 45 years second only to the SBC.

I have a buick/rover 215 in my bucket and i love it light and plently of power!!

  12. I have an unusaual engine suggestion, find an engine that you like and use it.

or I will have a pretty slick not used much by the masses engine for sale pretty soon, maybe you will decide it is just the thing for your car.

This may have been suggested but not gonna read all the posts but how about a 327 that is NOT a Corvette motor. Seem to be as rare as hens teeth.

  15. How about a 302 or 270 GMC six? They're not so rare that you can't find speed parts (or other parts) for them and they are still somewhat unusual in a hot rod. They can be built to put out some pretty good HP.

  17. You want different???

How about an International 345 V8!

  18. Don't know much about the 345 but I have had and used a couple of 304s over the years, talk about stump pullers.

If you want something REALLY unique, go with the 6 cylinder-V8 engine out of a Zappringer 8000. It's a dual overhead cam flat head with pushrods. Try to find one with 2-4 1/2 barrel carbs.

If one is going big, heavy and obsolete, no speed parts, it's hard to beat the Packard 374" or the IH 392" V8s but the '58-81 Ford truck 534" V8 will git 'er done - huge, heavy, gas hog, absolutely no speed parts ever made for it. Ever seen one in a rod? Thought not.

Heres a 325 POLY in my 58 Coronet
not real common ( unless you have a 57-58-59 Dodge )

  23. I have never heard of a 534" Ford you mus be talking about a real big ford truck. Ford used the big lincoln Y block in some of the ton -2 ton trucks after '58 or so. They were good engins and any Y block speed parts would fit them.

if I were building a hot rod A bone like the OP and was interested in being different but useing a genuine hot rod engone I may want to run this one with a hydromatic behind it.

Any nail head. A RB 383/413 Mopar. 389 Poncho. Even the 400/425/455 Olds will do. Way older and cooler than the late model stuff. $72/500 Cad. Last made in '76. Older than some HAMB members. Or be rad and BAD, run a late model FI, 'puter, OHC, OD, yada-yada street rod/machine/'tour,cruise ect......

How about a Taurus SHO V6? If you didn't want the bundle of snakes intake, I'm sure IDA's could be made to fit.

No shortage of ideas on this thread.

How about an early 50s Hudson Twin-H flathead 6? 305 cubic inches and enough get-up-and-go to be a stock-car race winner for years. I've never seen one on anything but a Hudson.
