History Dodge 413 Engine - Tell me about them...

Anybody used a Dodge 413 engine in a hot rod project.
Ive never had anything to do with them and would like to know a little about any experiences folks on here have had with them.

My son inlaw tells me he wants to use one in a hot rod but he also is only inspired by that Beach Boys drag race song I think.

All though I think a 360 hp Fuel Injected Stingray would put up a good fight...

Same thing as the 426 Wedge, but 13 cubes smaller...

 

A friend of mine is running one in a model A coupe with a push button trans, car runs strong & besides a few oil leaks it runs good.
In the mid 60s my cousin ran a 61 ply,413 at Atco & the car was very competetive.Good running motors.It would be great for a street rod.but they are kind of wide & the headers are "fugly"
Almost all of that series of blocks( 361,383,413 & the 426, etc.)are better good running motors, worth using.

Let's not forget about the 440....

 

Do a search on here for B/RB Mopars. They're incredible engines. Brutally strong, exceptional power in even stock form, very easy to work on and generally designed with common sense. I run a 383 in my Ford, and it has served me well for the last 10 years

 

They aren't the prettiest engines but they sure can run. Even the weakest 413s were stout motors.

 

There's the normal car version, high performance Max Wedge, & truck engines. The truck engines were used in motor homes into the 70s but there are differences between the 2, changing heads is recommended on those. Usuall comment is pistons are more expensive for the 413 than more common B/Rbs

 

Big block Mopars come in three flavors back in that day...
B, RB and HEMI.
B engines are 361, 383, 400 and RB (raised block) was used for 413, 426, 440 and it is also the base block used for the 426 Hemi.
413 was found in high performance form with "Long Ram"
This makes a very cool street rod engine but has a very wide footprint - gotta run without hood sides. Real big on torque. Low hood clearance with a tall engine design and you get into packaging trouble - hence the long runner setup putting the carbs outboard of the valve covers - these are scarce and very expensive setups - so maybe not all that practical.
All the RB engines are well known for BIG Torque and make great power.
Box your frame and be ready...

 

You can still buy the 6-Pack setup at any Dodge dealer for the R/B or the small block mopar 273-360 for about 2500 sheckles ($$$$.$$)...

 

I had a 63 Dodge with a 413/4spd. I still have the engine waiting for a toy to put it in. Very strong runner. I used a 440 in my pu and it pulls almost as good as my Diesel.

Killer mills, but I would probably opt for a 440 or a 426 wedge if I did not already have a 413. If you have one already or get a killer deal you will love it. It will cost more to build, but that is up to you. I have become a major convert to ma Mopar over the years and have a 63 330 with a 440... I love these motors!

 

Small valves in some versions so a head change may be in order.

 

Are the Max Wedge heads better that the '67 440 heads????... Info and pictures would be cool..

Max Wedge heads have huge ports. You will need a matching intake to use them.

Not all the 915 closed chamber heads are equal, some have small valves. Rumor has it in stock form they don't flow as well as a 906 or 452 head but you might not even be able to tell the difference.

If you're not worried about stock looks, the Edelbrock heads work great.

Sounds like it is not such a bad choice then.
Honestly, any RB sounds fine for his project which will most likely be in his model A.

Any pic's out there with these engines fitted into a model A or similar.

Don't forget that all B/RBs are not created equal. The later engines, especially post '70, have large journals due to the cast crank. Early motors have forged cranks and rods from the factory and can take a tremendous amount of abuse without skipping a beat

 

Same size journals on cast cranks.

The cast cranks are strong enough for a lot of applications.

 

beach boys was actually 409 not 413.

413s are tough as nails, they could be stock in some prettystout configurations, and in some circles were the eigine of choice. I would not discourage the son in law.

I have a friend that says that they are just big small block chevies with the oil pump in the right place.

The first one (413) I saw was in a then new 58 Imperial convertible....One of our customers owned it, and I recall that it easily moved that mega-ton monster car along rather quickly. Gobs of torque !!!
