My 49 merc is almost on the road

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by scott49mercury, Sep 13, 2012.

  1. I am finally getting ready to get my merc on the road, it has been my dream to drive a 49 merc sense I was a kid so maybe this weekend it will happen. The car is not perfect but I have done all the work myself and that is the hamb way.

Very nicely done-the hardtop treatment is very cool and looks right. Are you running Bubble Skirts? Can you show some more photos of the car?

It looks good. Show us more hard top treatment pictures.

  7. that is beautiful! Congrats. We share the same dream, but mine is still just a dream.

  8. well the skirts are not fiberglass I built them out of steel just a little different than what you would buy. I have not fiberglass on the car. the cool thing is this car was a 4 door sedan. I built the hardtop using a shrinker stretcher to get the exact window opening. I have a ton of hours in this car here is another pic.

Great job. You are gonna live the dream of a lot of us kids here. Even like the "stock" Merc hubcaps. I got some of those in case I ever get a 49-51 Merc! Had them on everything from a 49 Dodge to a utility trailer.
Friend picked them up around 57 at some late nite swap meet!
Good luck with a nice lookin car.
Tell us more. What's it runnin? What are you going to do for an interior? What color?

  15. What's "perfect" anyways? Mines NOT perfect either...but it's perfect for me! Are there ANY perfect cars?
I drive the shit out of mine,whenever,whever....cause that's what it should be about. Drivin, enjoyin, havin fun. Looks pretty good to me.
    BTW-mines a '49 too!!!

  16. Nice lookin ride! Are you going to have side windows?

  18. Bad Bob,

your right there never perfect and yes I will drive the shit once it is road worthy.

As for what motor I went with a Caddilac 472 and it sits on a 1972 buick chassis. yes I have plans for side windows I just have not got that far.

the only things I have left are to get the glass guy to install the windsheild and finish wiring it, then its time to test here out

Looks great! That back window is almost a moon roof!!

  20. I know it is almost like a moon roof, this is my first chop top so some area's I guess I lived and learned. I kinda wish I would have set the back window up a little more vertical because I dont know how much I can see out of it but hell it looks pretty cool and I will have to just live with it.

Car looks very good, don't worry about seeing out the back window, my 49 is chopped 6 1/2 " in the back, window is almost flat and not alot of head room but it looks cool.

    Keep up the fine work.

Super looking ride, I'm green with envy, low lid Mercs have always been my favorites.
I hope you reap all the rewards you have coming to you. Now enjoy the ride.

Back window and flow looks good to me. I like the look of no reveal around the rear. Have fun with the windows they can be pretty fun to get to seal and work good.

Looks great! Don't worry about seeing out the rear window, just use a peep mirror that you can't see anything in either.
