Customs Best All Around Car?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by critchdizzle, Sep 12, 2012.

  1. So, I'm having one of those deep moments of reflection (you know, the ones where people start wondering why all that steam's coming out of my ears) trying to figure out what kind of project I want to start on. I'm wanting something that I can do just about anything with, something that I can go cruising or to car shows just as easily as taking it to work when it's nice outside, or on a road trip. What's something that's good all around for that? I really like Model A's and shoeboxes, but from what I understand the A's aren't quite as good for commuting or road trips.

    Discuss.

A well built '30-31 A tudor or pickup is hard to beat. With a Mullens trailer or a camper on the PU you are go to go.

So far of all my old cars, the '50 Ford I have now has been the best. Rides decent, plenty of room. With a 302/C4 combo, there's plenty of power and it gets decent mileage. Best part is my wife loves it!

53/53 Chevy 2 door, either post or hardtop running a 250 six with a few mild go fast goodies, World Class T 5 and 3.50 or 3.70 gears. Add to that a roll and pleat interior, wide whites on steelies with an assortment of hubcaps to change out, a decent fresh one or two color paint job in a color that doesn't scream when the car was painted.

20 + mpg, it fits in at most car events and you can commute in it or load up your family or a couple of buddies and take a serious road trip.

Between 1954 and 1961 I spent a lot of miles riding in the back seat of my grandparents 54 two door Chev and those were very comfortable and happy miles.

I like 55 Chevs and have had one but no matter what you do to them you still see yourself a dozen times when you go to a major car event. It's either stone stock 55 look, stock color with custom wheels or the gasser look and not a lot in between.

Get yourself a nice lawn chair , a crying baby for the front fender. One of those hats with the fake grey hair out the top and some really nice crocheted cushions for the back seat and the tri five chevies are perfect... Get a shoebox

Late eighties/early nineties S-10. Light, initial purchase is cheap, a sbc slides right in, big late-model camaro discs are an easy install, and a exploder rear with one axle tube shortened is almost a bolt-in. And its real easy to find those rears with 3.73s.

Naw, just skip to the chase and get yourself a '48 Plymouth with too much horspower and Tremac...Maybe that's just me. Is super comfy for the long haul though.

so, what do you like? what is your budget? what are your build skills? there is no belly button perfect ride for everyone that meets your criteria. this is your decision. oh ya, check with your insurance company for limits on where and how often you can drive your new classic ride. have fun

1957 - 65 Chrysler product. Torsion bar suspension, 3 speed Torqueflite trans, B or RB big block motor (58 up) or hemi (57 -58 senior models).

Massive tailfins (57 - 61 Chrysler) or sleek Continental style (63 -64 Chrysler) or weirdness personified (1960 - 62 Plymouth and Dodge).

Cars and parts not too hard to get. Choice of 2 door, 4 door, convertible and wagon body styles. Prices on the low side.

Pretty much any Chrysler product from that period would be practical transportation anywhere today.

With the possible exception of 57 - 59 flathead six Plym and Dodge (slow) and the New Yorker and Imperial (gas hog).
