I would assume you can use these to drill hubs only, right?

ok , ive got one ! what if you have a pair of aftermarket axles and you wanted to change the bolt pattern , with different rockwell harnesses , what drill bit would you use ? take for example , if the flange has a rockwell hardness of 46 ? or have you tried this yet ?

  4. I'm gonna throw you a curve and add an oddball into the mix. Original 5X4 to change to 5X4.5 The 5X4 is on the 70 to 73 Dodge Dart Swinger with an 8&3/4 rear end. Very strong rear and perfect width for Hot Rods, 55.60" from drum to drum. I've got one in my roadster and if I could change the bolt pattern it would open up a lot of wheel choices. I'm gonna have the axles redrilled, but like you said, that means pulling them out. PITA. Sure would be nice to be able to do it your way. ;);) I do realize that there is no market for that size, but if it's possible I'd like to know.

    Nice tool...
I did a 6 on 5.5 to 5 on 4.5 using a wheel adapter.I knocked out the studs and bolted it to the wheel, drilled my holes with a small bit then up to the size hole needed. Then i threaded the holes to 1/2 inch and screwed in studs from behind with thread lock on the stud.Worked great...

I wanted 5 x 4.75 but the wheel adapter was not for that pattern...

After the portland swap meet it seems going from small mopar to large mopar and small chevy maybe one of the most popular guides, we will have them in about a week.
    stay tuned!

It's not design to redrill wheels, is that what you mean?

Not wheels, hubs. I have a drum setup that we earlier decided might not be wise to drill the drums due the close proximity of extraneous holes. I have figured out a way to drill the drums separately, but i want to use your tool to drill the hubs by themselves.

Oh yes there is no reason you couldn't just drill the hubs.

I just talked to my machinist, he says it could be done, and with the provided drills, however it will NOT be easy, he says to turn it very slow, and use LOTS of cutting oil, You may be better to get ahold of enco and buy a carbide tipped drill.

  11. Great! I'll be a buyer for that. I'll stay in touch via PM. Thanks, looks like a well spent 100 bucks.

HAMB'r larryj used a guide to drill F-100 hubs and drums, then wrote a nice article on how he got around the existing holes in the brake drums, if you want a copy Pm me with your e-mail address and I will send it on to you.

If anyone knows how to post a pdf for puplic viewing on here let me know and i'll put it up.

Does anyone know if you can drill the old falcon/mustang 4 lug to ford 5 lug?
    4 x 114.3 (4.25) to 5 x 4.5 (I think)

The easy answer is no there really isn't anyway to avoid having at least one of the new holes intersect the old hole. I have included a cad drawing of the issue, the 4 lug is in red and the 5 lug is in blue.

Now i suppose you could weld up that hole and then re-drill but you may be money ahead to just replace the axles.

4x4.25 is Brit/German Ford (Cortina, Capri, Merkur XR4Ti and a bunch of cars we didn't get here) plus the US Fords that borrowed Brit Ford parts e.g. Pinto/Mustang II with low-offset wheels also 4-lug Fox (Mustang, Capri, Fairmont, etc.) at a ~20-25mm offset and all the smaller FWD e.g. Escort, Focus at closer to 40mm. Oh, and Peugeot 405s...

The old 4-lug Falcon/Mustang is 4x4.5 so you'd share one hole with the original BC but it *should* be possible. The problem is that just about everything that came on those 4-lug cars is so weak and poorly supported parts-wise (7.25 rearends, 9" drum front brakes) that you want to think really hard whether it's really worth the effort.

BTW, We have made a few guides that are designed to re-drill Buick drums to the ford 5 on 5.5 pattern while they are still mounted on the Buick hub. You can re-drill the drums and then remove the hubs to mound on the ford hubs with an eccentric ring(we are not producing these yet you will have to have them made, But may if there is enough interest) We do not have them listed on the site as we only have a few available. pm me if you are interested.

O.K. that makes sense, I redrew the patterns with that info, It does leave two of the holes with a fairly narrow margin. Maybe there is an engineer on here that would like to comment on the remaining strength. I don't feel qualified to say it would be o.k and I like to error on the side of caution.

    Oop forgot the picture

Very cool setup. Question, I have a set of very nice alum wheels that are 5x5 pattern, however my camaro is 5 on 4.75. I was debating redrilling or even posibly redrilling the wheels a bit (I am thinking an 1/8 per wheel). DO you have this setup for redrilling the axle instead? Thanks!

We have been having really good feedback with these, thanks everyone for the support.

I'm sure there are some early mustang/falcon buffs on here. We are working on a guide to change the mustang/falcon 4 on 4.5" to 5 on 4.5" I need some info, Were all 4 lug axles the 7.5" rearend or did they make the 4 lug on the 8" rearend also. I'm needing to buy some axles for guinee pigs to try out the new guide and write the instructions.

    Thanks

The first 8 inch in the falcon was in 1963 and was 5 lug(5 x 4.5). The mustang was the small(falcon type) 7.5 rear if it was 4 lug. So to answer your question the falcon only had 4 lug with the 7.5 rear. The 8 inch was offered in 4 lug I think when the maverick/comet in the early 70's came out I think.

As far as I know, this is correct.

As for design, the hole pattern on the ring should have the same coordinates as the 5-to-4-on-4-1/2" Ford set that RottenLeonard made for me, which, incidentally, worked PERFECTLY!, just with a re-ordering of the guides, and countersunk holes.

I still have my 4-lug 6-3/4" stock Falcon axle, if you need any data/pictures, like where the backing pkate bolt access hole is.

We do have a prototype made up for making the 4-5 4.5" lug conversion, the bearing access hole has been the issue in that it would need to be plugged. our official stance on this is don't do it as we do not want the liability.... that being said I know that people are doing it on the 9 inch fords, and if done properly I feel it is safe but there are too many lawyers to make it worthwhile. So until we figure out a way to cover our butts on this we will hold off on releasing the guide. We are open to suggestions however...

Count me in. I think you could combine them into a couple 5-lug templates, then one 4, one 6, and one 8-lug

I would be particularly interested in 6x5.5 to 5x5. I hate the limited choices I have for my Dakota. I would also be very interested in 5x5 to 5x4.75. So many GM front brakes could be helped by that.

I have a question for u or possibly other people watching this thread. I have a 57 Ford car rear-end. I would like early big ford bolt pattern on my axles. Are all Ford axle ends the same diameter. Another words if I drilled big ford bolt pattern. 5x5.5 on those axles. Would the leg holes be to close to the outside of the diameter of the axle plate or all Ford same in that sense.
