  1. I believe that roadster put Gordon Hoyt in the 2 club after he bought it from Jerry.

if you open the thumbnail then right click and select open in new window or new tab, you should be able to enlarge it and read the text.

  6. Dad and I were at Ak's old shop on Whittier Bl working on the Stude in June of '61. A young kid drove his '40 coupe in and ask Jack Lufkin for a job. Jack came over and talked to Ak for a minute then walked back and handed the kid a broom, and told him to start with this. Ak gave Jerry Kugel his first job in a garage, and the rest is history.

i think this is the same block we raced in f/prod in the ranchero.

when scta changed the displacement rules, which put the 221 in the same class as the 260, the ol' man sleeved it to 180 cid. the rods were broader than the bore, so the pistons and rods had to go in from the bottom, ala offenhauser.

  13. I would like to see that block!

It was those articles that made me want to go B-ville for the last 50 years, finally got there this year. And it won't be another 50 until I go back. Thanks for posting all the great pics.

  26. Thanks for the link to the LSR site. This is one of the first pics that comes up there. Three very significant Bonneville cars from the 60's in this pic. Bob Mc Grath's Readhead, Bob Herda's Herda-Knapp-Milodon 'liner, and the Pisano Brother's Wedge Engineering Stude, the first ever stock bodied Studebaker to go 200mph. Unfortunately, not long after this pic was taken, the brothers learned the hard way, when the car went airborne at over 200, that at those speeds '53 Studes need some aero aids to stay right side up. I could have told them about that. ;)

Dean, I'm so glad you started this thread. I have thoroughly enjoyed it, to
say the least. Last week Otto Ryssman and his son came by for a visit and
to see my junk. We talked Hot Rod, Lakesters, and people for seven hours.
I don't know which one of us enjoyed it more. Wish I would have recorded
his stories for future generations though. He has some pics from back in the
day and he will let me post them when he digs them up. Can't wait.... Rich

  28. Otto Ryssmann was the only Bonneville 200mph Club member present at this year's Banquet (during Speed Week) who got into the Club during the 1950s . . . in 1952, to be exact. The man is a true treasure of the sport!

Otto was also a guest driver of the Hill-Davis City of Burbank Streamliner.
Willie Davis and Dave Thomas recreated the car to take to Bonneville this
year. You can find it on face book. Also at this LINK....
