Same here.I've always understood that the 16x4 was the V8 60 rim,1940 only.
    Great thread,very informative.

My solid 15 x 5.5 have the 5 on 4.75 bolt pattern and came factory on '55 Mercury. I need to take a few pics since I reversed 2 of the 5. They are marked with the Ford logo on one bump and KH on another. I guess I haven't another set like them yet. Twotoned's wheel pics look real close but not exact. Steven.

Some were. But the ones for the early CJ's didn't have nubs for the small
hubcaps. The later wagons and trucks had nubs around the outside.
I think, atleast thats how all of my wheels are.

UH, I thought the 5 on 4.75 were Chebbie's? Typo?

Do these wheels have a Ford logo on them?

  7. to add my .02 and to bump this.
my limited take on the tapered back and the stepped back 16" ford wheels is that the 4" wide ones have the step and the 4.5" wide ones (and 5" wide) have the taper. also the f100 had the outside bump wheels in a 16x5 with a 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern.

from what i understand the 16x4.5 inside bump was on the 46-48 ford car.

If I remember correctly the inside bump wheels were used until some time in '65 on f-100s. Can someone verfy this?

Rare, rare, RARE! One year ONLY, and very few 60 hp cars built this final year of production. DD

  14. no problem, the outside bump 16x5 are alot cheaper then the inside ones (and way easier to find).

Here's a wheel I found on a 41 Ford rear axle... no slits or slots. No clips or bumps for wheel covers...

15" diameter ... 5 lugs on 5-1/2 circle. Note the bump shape between the bolt holes (not triangular) ..looks similar but not identical to Lincoln rims... any ideas?

I never knew these existed until I ended up with one in a deal, then did my homework on it. Went back and found the match to it a few days later. I have a pair on the front of my coupe now! It seems like the center part of the wheel is a little closer to the outer lip. like the hubcap will stick out a little farther. Or is that just an illusion to me????

The attached is from a Motor Wheels Catalog

Note that the Ford F1 Pickup changed in 48 not 49 like the cars
Also Standard wheel/Tire were 6.00x16 4.5 wide with the 5x5.5 bolt pattern

hey wheel kid! I was going through my Fairlane's wheel pile and what I thought was a set of four FoMoCo 14s has proven to be two pairs of different FoMoCo wheels.

I'm thinking the solid one of the left is older? Maybe original? The one on the right with the openings is probably later?

  22. "Solid" 14"x5.5" rim on left was at least used on '58-'63 T-birds and full-size station wagons - center section welded to the rim carried more weight than riveted "slotted" rim on right. Center hub I.D. changed in '62 and got a hair bit bigger with change in hub diameter - can't remember if it went from 2-3/8" to 2-5/8" or what it was, but long story short is that a rim from a '61-older T-bird won't fit right on a '62-'63 'Bird.

I have a question for wheelkid or anyone who knows
I have wide 5 wheels 16x5.5 reversed with tapered
outside steped inside and thiner material 2mm vs 3mm
and with spokes like a stock wide 5 and they are stamped
K-H if i remember right what did the came on
since they are thinner i think they are not truck wheels

The axles they came from had much thicker material
in the wishbones (about 1/4 inch) and drums whith finns

I thought I'd add a bit to the mix.

Here are two of the 'solid' Ford 14s I am going to be running on my '64 Fairlane.

the one on the left spent 35+ years resting under (not on) a '62 Galaxie in a salvage yard.

this is how it looked yesterday after I took it to the car wash:

see the bubbles??? ^^^^ I made a stop at a gas station and aired the thing up LOL!

back side of the same rim and tire:

the two freshly painted rims look nearly identical but if you look closely you'll notice that the one on the right has an additional ring stamped onto the lip that the one on the left does not. why? no freakin' clue but three of mine have the extra lip.

here are some markings off the inside of the rim of the left one:

the number below "5.5 J" is actually "59" - possibly the year the rim was produced? the face of the rim is stamped "K H" for "Kelsey Hayes".

here are some inner markings from the rim on the right:

again we see the "5.5 J" but this time with a "K" after it. I got no clue what any (most) of this means but here ya go any way!

  27. Good post..I was told to check this one out..I picked these up early this spring with tires for a couple of fins.....came off a 48 F-100...all marked with KH...will take tires off to see if I can find more info...these are 15" rims with the inner nubs...nice shape!!!

I've got a 16x4 Ford wheel I'm trying to identify, somebody wanted to buy it but was unsure if it might be a "defective" wheel (the stamping is "double" stamped) any thoughts? The stamping reads "16X4.0EE" above "49" twice.

I'm going to use the outer hoops from a set of the 16x5 mentioned above "with the outside hubcap bumps" and replace the centers with a set with the inside bumps that I removed from a set 16x4 wheels that had very rusty hoops. The donor wheels that I'm using are the same as the lower picture in post #70. A cheap and easy way to get 16x5 early Ford wheels.
