I was just going through this thread for the 100th time and I noticed alot of you guys have skirts with a lip at the bottom. What are those off of or are they all custom made?

    Hello,

Long before I was able to drive, our cousins had a stick shift 52 Chevy for their daily driver, family car. They lived around the corner from us in Long Beach and I remember going places in that car. At the time, I thought skirts were what women and girls wore around the neighborhood and to school. But as I read and learned, skirts are for cars, too.

My cousin’s mom was almost 5 feet tall, but at the time, she towered over us little kids. She drove this 4 door 52 Chevy all over the place for birthdays, holiday gatherings, and weddings. Sometimes, my brother and I would go in their car just for fun. Those stock seats seemed like “felt.”

The stick shift was something new as my dad always had an automatic transmission in his big Buicks. Picturing this almost, 5 foot tall lady shifting that column shifter was just classic. She would bang that stick column up into 2nd gear and then slam it down to cruise.

We were always in the back seat and rough housing with her two sons on the way to a party or some family function. It was fun watching this older lady shift and drive so well. It was her car and she was proud of being the primary driver to work and family functions. It was a cool 4 door car with skirts.

We never knew why she ordered it with skirts, but there they were. My cousins said it looked funny and always moved the lever over to take the skirts off. Maybe she was an early Bonneville racer or custom car fanatic in the making…ha!

There were some days of playing around inside that 52 Chevy shifting like her and banging the stick up into second. We had races to see who could shift the fastest through all of the gears. The clutch was a little hard to reach, but a little seat adjustment helped with the connection. Little did I know then that we were learning to speed shift as 8-9 year old kids. HA! At the time, it was just plain, old fun.

The Chevy experience? The image of driving around our neighborhood and to places like the San Pedro waterfront was ingrained the memory banks. That 4 door Chevy was very cool, much like the Chevy cars on this thread…great job on those 49-52 Chevy cars.

Check out the 4 ladies out for a cruise, being chased by a couple of guys in a 59 Chevy Impala. Watch out!
