Didn't fit the criteria for a spec class that top fuel has become. The NHRA fears innovation and free thinking.

  7. So it's like Nascar but in a straight line?

  8. Nope!

No tire iron fights in the pits.

  9. These guys use old torque wrenches.......

  10. I didn't think roundy-round guys knew what those were. :D

  12. Who says they were banned,
and not just out run by the Hemis ?

  13. That's what I was thinking from the start of this thread.

It can't be for cubes. You've got 426 MoPar, 427 Chevy, 428 later Pontiac, 429 Ford and 454 Chevy not to mention any I may have missed.

Even today's rules cap at 500.

  15. ENGINE
    Any internal-combustion, American-made OEM-type engine permitted. Maximum
cubic inches 470; Minimum weight per cubic inch 4.60; maximum bore center spacing
4.840 inches, must maintain bore centers +/- .015-inch from stock. Blocks and
cylinder heads must retain all physical characteristics of stock-production
components. Billet blocks permitted. Any new block design must be submitted to
NHRA Technical Services Department for acceptance. Machining of billet blocks to
reduce weight is prohibited. Alloy and billet heads permitted. Accepted billet heads
and block must remain as manufactured. OEM cylinder-head bolt pattern mandatory
for all cylinder-head types. Cylinder heads must retain stock OEM-valve angles.

    read another way:
any engine that fits our spec. the ford was 'ruled out' not 'banned'.

i believe that this goes back to the VRA days and heritage series had to basically adopt the rules because thats where everyone already was. i've heard the discussion before, but can't remember the details, but typical of big bucks drag racing, the guy with the big bucks make the rules for the organization. not the other way around.

  17. Is that why the HAMB drags is the only bonafide,affordable- real seat of the pants, down to earth enjoyable drag race event left on the planet?

AWSOME answer. But does a 385 series really belong in a vintage/heritage class, I didnt think they started using them until the early to mid 70s.

  19. I don't agree with a lot of things about today's drag racing, but there is nothing like the experience of watching, hearing and feeling two cars with combined horse power of around 30,000 or more head down the strip!!

I think the O.P. meant ford's 427 cammer engine and it was a hemi.

I'm seeing that Nascar banned the SOHC from it's racing from the get go but didn't find that the cammer or big blocks were banned from drag racing except for the cammers not being allowed in stock classes.
Someone put together a pretty good synopsis on the Ford big blocks here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_FE_engine
As far as for having them in diggers or funny cars the $$$$$ factor may be the biggest thing.
For the Hamb drags a Cammer would automatically put the car as being built post 1964 as the engine didn't come out until 1964. That would make it not HAMB friendly is that respect.

    BB Chevy 4.840" bore spacing.
    BB Ford 4.900" bore spacing.
    FE Ford 4.630" bore spacing.

The 429 was introduced in 1968.

When NHRA was started there stated porpose was to give guys a place to race to get raceing off the street. I'd say on this point they failed how many street cars are at NHRA meets. It's all about the money.

    NHRA- No Hot Rods Allowed

It's too bad the NHRA is the only show in town for NTF or TF. If there was another sanctioning body that would embrace diversty in racing that would really help. Money talks as they say.
