Looks like Larry Reep's A/FD from Texas.

 

Bovan drove it as did Dave Beebe later on. And it featured the best of everything. The beautiful paint was applied by Imperial Kustoms of Oklahoma. In 68 the car won tons of races at Irwindale.

Speaking of hearing fuel cars a long way away, when I was 12 or so I lived in El Toro California. On hot still nights (every summer night) on the weekends you could clearly here the fuel machines at OCIR do thier burnout back up and run the run. I would imagine in my mind what was visually happening as I listened without a ticket or means to get there. My future wife to be was there every weekend as her Dad worked security. Although I hadn't met her yet.

This article says the car ran a 392 with Boss valve covers to give the illusion of all Ford.

Cool ^^^^^^^ A lot of work to make you think it's a Boss "9".

But the plug wires do go to the rear of the engine........ give-a-way for the gear heads of the day.

During the spring 1966 match bash at Green Valley Raceway at Smithfield, TX, Detriots Pete Seaton tangles with Gene Snow's Dodge. Track owner Bill McClure is photographing the proceedings.

 

Steve Bovan was the all american guy, didn't drink, smoke or swear. Really nice guy, I got to know him when he drove the Blair's car and I worked for Al Van der Woulde. I was shocked to hear that he got involved with drug dealing and was "accidentally" shot nine times walking out of a restaurant in Orange County.

 

Roland Leong's Hawaiian takes on Chuck Kurzawa in the Ramchargers AA/FD during top fuel eliminations at the 1967 Nationals.

 

When I first saw this one, I thought it might be Joe Smith in the Fenner Tubbs car, but the lettering doesn't look right and I never saw one of Joe's cars smoke like this. Anyone know of another black Plymouth S/S car?

Thompson's car was monocoque or boat style construction, much like the salt LSR cars.
The first deep cars I saw were Schumachers Wonder Bread Vegas. I first saw them all tied together and pulled through tech at Gainsville in I think 71' (could have been 70') with a ElCamino, and I followed them back and looked them over real good.
Someone else said Barry Setzer's Vega car was the first Buttera deep car, but I recall Schumacher's.
There were some conventional Logghe style cars narrow enough that the headers went over the top rail, and the Ramchargers may be one of those, but the driver still sat mainly on top of a shallow frame.

Now I can't answer the question, but I can narrow the first deep dragster style cockpit f/c to an early flat front Vega of either Setzer or Schumacher, which I'm almost certain Buttera built for both.

Look for Thompson's 69 car, their is a utube video that shows a digger style chassis with headers over the rails. Plus look up his 70 maverick in the 70's funny car site that states it was a new chassis built by Buttera

It kind of looks like lots of (but not all) went to the narrow chassis in the 1970 season. From the looks of it, Woody Gilmore started building narrow chassis in for that season.

 

When we talked about this last time, I thought the YouTube deal showed that the Thompson Mustangs used the dragster/altered type cage, but were still on the wide chassis?

 

I couldnt help but make comment on the complete absence of barriers as the fans stand but a few feet away. Seems like a place reserved for "Handicap spectating."
